found a solution to my problem. I had to delete a user profile due to hard
drive problems and created an outlook backup PST file in the desktop saving
from all folders including calndar and desktop. This file is 265kb big so I
know the data is there but I cannot retrieve into outlook.

Have tried import function and open data file (I think Mike Outlook MVP
strongly suggests the latter but neither brings any action. No error
messages, no timeglass, just nothing.

I've tried the SCANPST function and tried from the backup.

That is the file size of an empty PST file. It contains no data. I have no
idea what you did because you haven't told us, but you certainly didn't
create a back up of the data.
Deleting a profile never deletes the data file, so you should easily be able
to find the original data file. Might want to read the many posts here on
how to create backups of your Outlook data.

In addition to the earlier comment, just open the original PST file with
Outlook (File | Open | Outlook Data File), and all your data will be
there. Do not use Import!
