Outlook 2007 cursor sticks

G

A problem that seems to occuring with greater frequency is the sudden
freezing and unfreezing of the display, along with the disappearance of the
cursor.

When the screen freezes, continued keystrokes will populate the keyboard
buffer. When it unfreezes, the keyboard buffer prints to the screen and the
typed material appears; however, the cursor often does not.

This happens after approximately 10 words, and it repeats. The delay is
several seconds and is very annoying. Other than Office 2007, there is no
new software or other changes to my system. Outlook 2003 never had this
problem.

Is there something running in the background that can be terminated? Is
there a quirky problem with the Word .dll?

If I cannot fix this, I will be forced to go back to 2003. --Don't want to
do that, but this freezing screen is annoying.

No. I happens while I am composing the message. For example, by the time I
have typed this number of words, the screen would have frozen for 10 - 20
seconds.

Good questions: PST ~ 50 kB, I defrag nightly. It is a scheduled job that
defrags the HDD at 1:30 AM.

This is a sample of the problem. I shall type something until it sticks. I
will mark it, then measure the duration of the delay ** (5 s). That was the
first stop. Let’s see how long it takes for the second one to occur.
Sometimes I can type for a few sentences before it decides to raise its
frustrating head. W ** (11 s) ---This should give you an idea of the
frequency and duration. Maybe if I type some more we can obtain a good third
measurement. I am typing this in Outlook 2007 as I normal ** (12 s) normally
would. It is also typical for the delays to lengthen; although, there may be
some shorter ones occurring after some of the lon ** (11 s) longer delays.

Here is a sample typed in Outlook 2007. The ** are the locations at which
the screen froze. The times in () are the number of seconds the screen was
frozen.

Do you have Windows Desktop Search 3.0 installed? Has it completed its
indexing? Use Task Manager to see if it is running and how much RAM it is
taking up. I had problems with it on another machine and had to uninstall
and reinstall to fix the long Window load times (30 seconds to a minute to
switch windows) but it works fine now. I never got around to being able to
type any messages since it took so long to load a new mail message. I went
the scorched earth route instead.

I see some of the behavior the OP is describing, but never with this
frequency. In my case, it's always activity on the hard drive (Outlook
accessing my PSTs) that makes Outlook freeze for a few seconds. However,
it doesn't happen more than once in an email.
I doubt that his PST size is the problem though, as the presumed 50 MB
is just not big enough. I see this issue with two >1.4 GB PST files.

Actually, I have found that, while it does help, the problem does not go away
entirely. There is another bazaar thing that I have observed. While typing,
the mouse cursor gets lost between windows. For example, if I start a new
email with Outlook consuming a large area on the screen, then the email
window covers the Outlook screen. I can place my mouse-cursor in the email
window and begin typing. When the display hangs, the mouse-cursor is also
gone. If I move the mouse, I have noticed that it is the Outlook screen
behind the email screen that is now active. Wierd and annoying. Any ideas,
anyone?
