Outlook 2007 \ Contacts - Group ... possible glitch?

D

Dave Horne

I've been using Outlook for many years. Just now I 'removed' several
members from a Group Contact but _did not_ save the changes when closing
the Group Contact. If I reopen the Group Contact I see the changes that I
made (but did not save). I am prompted to Save or Cancel the 'changes' yet
again and again I Cancel.

The only way to view the Group Contact without those changes is to open yet
another Contact and then go back to the Group Contact in question. I now
see the unchanged (and original) Group Contact.

What am I not understanding here? Also, if this is a known issue, my
apologies in advance for taking up your time. Thanks, Dave Horne

I should add this - I was showing my wife how Contact \ Groups work since
she has experienced problems with a particular Group. She will send a
'Group mailing' but does not wish everyone to receive the message. She has
on occassion deleted members in Contact \ Group instead of deleting the
members in question _after_ expanding the Group in the e-mail message
itself. I showed her today what would happen and that's when I 'discovered'
this possible glitch.

Thanks, DH

Outlook (up until and including 2007) doesn't USE "groups" - what exactly
are you talking about?

Are you referring to a Distribution List? Exactly how are you making the
changes? Describe the steps.

Yea, it's a Distribution List, sorry. What I did was this - I removed a
member or two (or more) from the list in question and then changed my mind.
I go to close the list and am prompted to Save changes or Cancel. I cancel.
If I reopen the Distribution List the 'changes' I made, though did not save,
are displayed. When I exit that list, I am again prompted to Save or
Cancel, and again I cancel. I then reopen the list and still see the
changes I made though did not save.

The only way to 'correct' this situation I''ve found is to open yet another
Contact and then go back to the original list and then I see the list as it
should appear.

The only reason I stumbled upon this, I was showing my wife how a
Distribution List works since she has had problems working with it. I was
surprised to stumble upon this.

So, try this - create (or use an exisitng Distribution List), remove a
member or two or three, exit the List but do not Save, reopen the List and
see if you had the same experience as I.

Thanks, Dave Horne

DL's behave behave very erratically and have never been reliable. Few of us
even use them for that reason. Behavior will vary depending on whether you
base them on underlying Contacts in your Folder and whether those Contact
were created in the same Folder where they now reside (if you ever migrated
your data, for example, as most of us have, DL's will behave unpredictably).
You'd do will to use alternatives like the rest of us do. If you rely on
DL's, you'll regret it.

One more thing - I keep writing that I clicked on 'Cancel' when exiting the
list, what I should have written was I clicked on 'No' when asked if I
wanted to save the chnages I made.

.... sorry 'bout that. DH

The only thing that might work with a DL is to use the "Update Now" button.
It works about 30% of the time.

I'll have to try this on my Outlook 2007 instance. It doesn't work that way
for my Outlook 2003 instance. Clicking Cancel aftre making changes and then
reopening the DL shows the original DL contents.

I clicked No, as you did, not Cancel.
