Outlook 2007 Beta 2 keeps on hanging

Mark Sztainbok

I'm using Beta 2 of Outlook with an IMAP server and I am finding that it
hangs on a regular basis and stops responding. It seems to happen most often
when doing a Send/Receive and also sometimes when changing folders or
selecting emails.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, do you know any fixes as it's
getting very annoying as I have to keep killing Outlook to be able to use it
again (and yes I realise it's only a beta :p)

Does it really hang? Or does it go crazy on your harddrive?
Outlook 2007 has some serious performance issues in which it might be
working on your hard drive for 15-30 minutes and appear to be hung, but
will respond after that. Defragmenting your hard drive helps a lot! (I
defragment mine every day and cut my wait time down to around 3 mins
max. It used to be 30). Next time it happens, leave Outlook alone and go
to lunch.

Definitely hangs. The hard disk isn't active at all.

Just had it hang just now when I pressed Send on an email. The Send button
is still highlighted and Outlook isn't responding. Send/Receive Status is
42%. I've left it for at least 20 minutes and there has been no change.

Stuff like this is regularly happening, most commonly when I send an email
or change the selected email or change email folders.

I'm using IMAP over SSL.

I left it overnight (about 10 hours) and this morning I came back it was
back to normal. Very odd behaviour.

You left it running when it was hanging for 10 hrs? How big is your IMAP
PST?
Is this an upgrade from a 2003 file or did you create a new profile in
2007? If you didn't create a new profile in 2007, I urge you to do so.

Very small actually. I just had a new account set up so it only has emails
from the last few weeks. The total size is about 20MB. The only reason I
left it for 10 hours was that I was going to bed and thought that I would
check to see if it fixed itself overnight.

It's an upgrade from 2003.

Create a new profile. This is not normal. I have only seen Outlook
hanging for several minutes on PSTs that are several hundred MBs if not
a few GB.
IMAP PSTs are old PSTs in 2003 by default, but are new PSTs in 2007 (old
meaning pre-2003, new meaning 2003 format). Use Control Panel, Mail to
create a new profile. You can add your IMAP account and current PST (not
the PST that contains your IMAP email, but the other one that has your
Calendar, Contacts, etc) then there as well.

Actually I readded my IMAP account after upgrading to 2007 as Outlook was
complaining that IMAP search folders wouldn't work unless I did. I just
checked the file and it is definitely in the 2003 format. My Hotmail account
on the other hand wasn't so I've readded that and it is now in that format
too.

Hi Mark,

Did you just readd them or create a new profile? You'd be surprised how
many issues just disappear when you work with a new instead of an
upgraded profile. I urge to create a new one!
