Outlook 2007 - Address Book empty (no contact names)

K

Kathy

When I transferred data from Outlook 2007 in Windows XP to my new Vista, all
went well except the address book is empty. At "Contacts" folder, I
right-clicked "Properties" but within the "Outlook Address Book" menu, the
check box for "show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" is dimmed. I have
also tried the suggestions at " http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197577/en-us
" without success.

Would appreciate help to get an address book.

You posted no information that would permit help from a newsgroup. How you
transferred your Outlook data is crucial information. We have no idea what
you did. You could not possibly have "tried all the suggestions" in that
article because some would be relevant to your situation and some would not.
Which you tried and precisely what happened is what you should post to this
newsgroup.
Since all we can do is guess, I would guess you transferred your data
incorrectly, corrupted your Outlook profile, and must now create a new
profile.

Which method of transferring did you use?
Is the Outlook Address Book service now added to your account configuration?

To transfer my data, I used the Windows Vista Easy Transfer cable. The
suggestions I tried in the article were Items 1-8 in the first section of
"Add the Outlook Address Book service to your profile". When that did not
work, I tried Items 1-10 of the section "If your profile does not recognize
the Outlook Address Book Service". Under both subjects, I did not try the
steps for the earlier versions of Outlook.

Anticipating that your guess was correct, I created a new profile per
"http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/829918 " . I imported my
personal folders and now everything is working well.

Thank you.

Indeed. You must never used Windows Easy Transfer with Outlook. It creates a
corrupt profile. The only other thing you did wrong was import your PST
file. Next time, just open it. Importing loses data and can also corrupt
your profile.

I do wonder though why Windows Easy Transfer is installed on all new Vista
computers and does not give the warnings you mentioned. I will though heed
your advice and thank you for it.

I used the Windows Easy Transfer software and cables. After setting up a new
profile, the Outlook Address Book service is now added to my account
configuration.

Thank you

I do wonder though why Windows Easy Transfer is installed on all new Vista
computers

Because it works well for most things, just not for Outlook.
