Outlook 2007 Address Book

Outlook 2007 on new laptop with Windows Vista; will not let me convert my
contacts folders into address book. I transferred files from old laptop
using transfer cable. All the addresses are in contacts in Outlook 2007,
but cannot convert to address book. I right clicked properties and went to
address book tab, but the option box for making the contacts list an address
book is grayed. Please advise.

You cannot make an address book as that concept simply does not exist. The Address Book is a virtual view of your contacts folder displaying those contacts that have an electronic address.

You are missing the Outlook Address Book service. Control Panel->Mail Icon->Accounts. Last tab, add the OAB service there. Close and restart Outlook.

Milly, thanks. I understand the concept. Under the Address Book tab you
indicated, it shows that I have Outlook Address Book, when I click on this, I
get a dialogue box with instructions to add contacts folders by right
clicking on the contacts folder/ choosing properties/ Outlook Address book/
and then checking the box to "show the folder as an e-mail Address Book."
The problem is the check box is grayed, meaning that I cannot give that
instruction

That means you have to create a new mail profile, since Outlook 2007 won't
let you fix the OAB service in an existing profile.

Brian,
i've seen this reply in several threads so I hate to keep asking the same
question. I've done all you've indicated to do.
a. created new mail profile etc but i stil don't have an address book. my
outlook address book is listed as an MAPI so not sure if that is helpful. by
creating a new mail profile and setting it as default all i accomplished was
140 plus messages (duplicates) being downloaded from the server. what next?

Describe the EXACT steps you took to create the mail profile.

Hi Brian - I'm having the same issue. The steps I followed to re-create the
mail profile were straight from the MS troubleshooting site:

1. If Outlook is running, click the File menu, and then click Exit to close
Outlook.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, click User Accounts, and then click
Mail.
3. In the Mail Setup-Outlook dialog box, click E-mail Accounts.
4. In the Account Settings dialog box, select the name of the Outlook
Address Book Service to be removed, and then click Remove.
5. Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the Outlook Address Book
Service.
6. In the Account Settings dialog box, click New.
7. If you see the Add New Email account-Choose E-mail Service dialog box,
select the Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP option, and then click
Next.
If you see the Add New Email account-Auto Account Setup dialog box, proceed
to the next step.
8. In the Add New Email account-Auto Account Setup dialog box, type your
name, e-mail address, and password, and then click Next.
9. When you see the congratulations screen, click Finish.
10. Start Outlook.

I followed these steps exactly, and still cannot fix the problem - please
help! :)

Those steps in no way create a new mail profile, but attempt to alter an
existing profile. After opening the Mail applet in Control Panel, click
Show Profiles, then click Add to begin the process of creating a new mail
profile. See if this helps:

Thank you for that site - it was easy to follow. I followed all the
instructions to the letter. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem. The
enable box is still greyed out. Do you have any other suggestions? I really
appreciate your help.

State your exact steps so that we can validate that you followed them
correctly.
