This problem started a couple of weeks ago with Outlook 2003/SP2. OS is
WinXP Pro/SP@ with all the latest updates.

When I first start it up it will work fine for a couple of hours. Then it
will time out trying to connect to the POP server. It always connects to
the SMPTE server. The only way I've found to get working again is to close
and immediately reopen Outlook and it will it will work fine for another
couple of hours.

Outlook is configured to automatically look for email every one minute.
I've changed that time to five minutes and it still fails.

I have Outlook setup on another PC to different mail box on the same server
which never fails. I guess I should configure that PC to query my email
account that's causing problems and see if that one will fail.

I have done a repair, uninstalled/reinstalled Outlook with no help. It
happens with two different antivirus applications installed (not at the same
time), whether turned on or off to scanning email.

Any suggestions?

I tried Mozilla Thunderbird email client and it works fine will no failures
to connect.

Increase your polling interval to at least 10 minutes.

I'll try your suggestion, thanks.

Ten minutes is the minimum recommended interval for mail polling.

Eventually fails at any polling time setting, up to and including one hour.

The transfer of my email account to a new hosting company was completed this
morning. Any polling interval down to and including every one minute works
just fine.

Thanks to all that took time to comment.
