Cannot connect Outlook 2003 to Exchange

I have a Windows XP PC, fully patched with Office 2003 connecting to a
SBS2003 network. Everything has been working fine until this week. Now
Outlook is unable to connect to Exchange, apparently with no cause. I
have created new user profiles, uninstalled and re-installed office
into a clean folder, removed the PC from the domain and re-instated
it, stopped and restarted all the Exchange services all to no avail. I
have also removed all the outlook profiles and created new ones. The
only anomaly I have is that when I create a new Outlook profile and
specify the server (which i did by IP) and the mailbox name (using
first couple of letters only) and then hit the Check Name button it
resolves correctly. To me this indicates that Outlook can connect to
Exchange ...... but when I start Outlook I get the 'you must be
connected to exchange etc.....

I can connect to the mailbox using OWA and every other PC on the
network is fine

Any ideas?

Anything installed client side that could interfere with the connection to
Exchange? (e.g. stateful desktop firewall rather than using Windows XP
built-in firewall)

I have McAfee Security Suite on the PC but that has been on for ages.
I have checked both the settings of the Windows Firewall and the
McAfee firewall and can see no obvious issues.

Humor me and uninstall McAfee to see if Outlook will connect w/out issue.

It hasn't been the same for ages as it gets updates, right?

Get rid of McAfee and don't use two firewalls at the same time. To
replace McAfee, I recommend the free Avast from www.avast.com.
