Outlook 2003 using IMAP crashes on Vista Home Premium

I had been successfully using Outlook 2003 Professional Edition with IMAP
accounts on WinXP Professional SP3. I purchased a new laptop with Vista Home
Premium SP1, removed the trialware Office 2007 and Works installations, and
installed Office 2003 Professional Edition.

Since then, Outlook 2003 has been nearly unusable, crashing frequently. I
tracked down the problem to an apparent conflict with the AVG antivirus that
I had also installed. Removing the AVG antivirus causes fewer crashes, but
intermittent problems still continue. I have tried other antivirus products,
but they all seem to cause Outlook to crash. Obviously, I shouldn't be
running my computer without antivirus, but it is the only way my mail stays
up long enough to get through my messages. Does anyone have any suggestions?
- System File Checker has been run and found no problems.
- Outlook has been repeatedly deinstalled and installed without change.
- a typical event viewer log message is:
Faulting application OUTLOOK.EXE, version 11.0.8217.0, time stamp
0x480f95d9, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp
0x4791a7a6, exception code 0xc0000264, fault offset 0x0008ee83, process id
0xc98, application start time 0x01c97d8bf236adf6.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

You dont 'have' to install your AV with the outlook intergration option, as
such intergration is a frequent cause of Outlook problems, niether does it
afford you any greater protection since the AV real time detection should
detect any nasty that try to install when you open a msg/attachment you
should'nt
Do you have any other anti spam apps configured, or any other outlook
addins?
How does Outlook behave if you start it using the safe switch?
Run
Outlook.exe /safe

BTW Uninstalling/reinstalling Outlook rarely cures a problem, since the
reinstall picks up the old Outlook Profile
Generally you first port of call is to run Outlook detect/repair

As I said in my original post, removing the antivirus products and all
add-ins did not really make much of a difference - Outlook 2003 continued to
crash, albeit less frequently. I finally implemented a fix that works -
downgrade my spanking new Vista Home Premium laptop to Windows XP
Professional, reinstall everything, and I haven't had a single crash since.
It took me eighteen hours of effort to find all the necessary compatible
drivers and to get everything installed and working, but my return to
productivity has been worth it. I certainly won't be returning to any version
of Vista or it's successors until Microsoft better supports it's own software

I'm glad to hear that. Perhaps there is some magical incantation I missed. I
did research the matter thoroughly on the 'net and tried everything
recommended - new profile, clean registry completely between installs, check
for missing / invalid registry entries for MsOffice, etc. This went on for
two weeks before I posted to this thread in desperation. I am a techie and
programmer who has been working with computers for over thirty years, and
certainly no newbie. If I had problems that couldn't be fixed, I really feel
sorry for the unsuspecting regular users forced to "upgrade" to Vista. By the
way, friends I have who *do* work for Microsoft and have access to their
internal resources couldn't fix it either.
