Outlook 2003 multiple instances

After opening and closing Outlook 2003 several times, the Windows Task
Manager shows that multiple instances of the program are still open. This is
true despite the fact that all indications show program is closed (foreground
program, taskbar icon, and tray icon removed). The first clue this is
occurring is that even after closing Outlook, when it is re-opened, new
e-mail has already been downloaded to the Inbox. This behavior occurs even
after deletion and reinstallation of Outlook.
This is obviously undesirable behavior. Why is it occurring? Is there a
reason any user would want this behavior to occur such that there is a
setting within the program to control it?

Generally means that there is a 3rd party application/addin that is causing
Outlook to stay resident. Some of the things that could be the cause....

instant messenger, fax, pda, antivirus, acrobat (full version not reader),
using Word 2003 as the e-mail editor and Word is still open, .etc.
