Outlook 2003 hangs on start up

G

Guest

I just purchased a new laptop running XP and Office Small Business with
Outlook 2003. At work it connects to the Internet via the company LAN. At
home it connects via a wireless router on a cable modem. Each time I switch
from work to home or home to work and start Outlook 2003 for the first time,
it would poll all my email accounts for new mail and then hangs with no error
message. It would not even close unless I kill it with task manager. Then
upon openning a second time it works fine. I tried detect and repair
multiple times, but no luck. Any idea please??

Could you post your exact steps to reproduce? Also include information on
whether or not you hibernate your laptop and restart Outlook when moving
between connections.

I do have the option set to hibernate after a period of time when on battery,
and I do see a "hyerfil.sys" file in addition to the usual "pagefile.sys".
However, I always fully shut down windows when leaving one location with a
complete cold boot when starting up again from the other location. One thing
I might add is that there is a short cut in startup to automatically load
Outlook on system start up.

Aha there it is! You should set that at login; not at startup. Another
option would be to put a shortcut to Outlook in your Startup folder.

I am sorry, but set what at login?

The hypernation option is set in the battery property.

Outlook automatic start is set by having a short cut in the "C:\Documents
and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" folder.

Ah sorry, I misread. I thought you had created a Scheduled Task to run at
startup instead of at login.

When you remove the automation and start it manually after the system is
full started does it work then?

After the auto start at system start up (which will hang) and after I kill it

Alright; see how that works. Note that with most wireless connections the
connection is established AFTER login. If you start Outlook before that you
are basically starting it without a network connection. Depending on your
configured accounts this could be impossible or cause a time-out.

I removed Outlook from auto start up, shut down windows, went home,
established Internet connection, then started up Outlook manually and it
worked. I did the same when coming back to the office, allowed the system to
boot up and established connection with the company LAN before starting up
Outlook manually, and it worked without hanging.

Thank you.............. It seems to be something Microsft should fix Outlook
not to hang but simply update network connection.

That would depend a bit on your account configuration. Which account are you
using anyway? If you completely disconnect from any network can you start
Outlook succesfully then?

Some wireless cards (like from Intel) have in their provided software the
option to establish the connection at startup already and not after logon.

You mean which 'email account'? I have two, one from the consumer cable ISP
optimum online, and one from Aplus and hosted domain.

I do have an Intel wireless adaptor. Will poke around and find out how to
set it to be on at start up instead of waiting till logon.

Thanks.

I did this today and it works. I have a Dell PC and today is the first time
that I can actually use my Dell PC w/ Outlook 2003.

uninstall the software called "OutlookAddin." It is made by Cyberlink
for Dell and it is known to cause a lot more issues then just this. It
causes a lot of performance overhead as well.
