Outlook 2003 failure to send and returned receipt to received emai

Right, much like many others it seems I can't receive email with Outlook 2003
which was installed on a brand new Dell pc with Vista Home Premium
pre-installed. just plain old Office 2003, no plug ins or anything. BT
Boradband measured at above 5.5 MBs.

Have not been able to resolve this error

"Task 'pop.freeserve.co.uk- sending' reported error (0x8004210B). The
operation timed out waiting for a response."

I've asked microsoft - no help
I've asked Dell - no hope, just a token refund for the inconvenience that is
Vista compatibility or lack of it
I've asked Orange/Freeserve - not their problem
I've spent hours on the phone to MCAFEE, they've stopped/disbled everything
and it still doesn't work.

Doesn't matter how long I set the timeout for, and my old XP machine quite
cheerfully fetches the mail on dial-up.

I've got used to the idea of never using Microsoft software ever again but
in the meantime I can receive email. One of which asked for a return receipt
and before I could stop myself I'd clicked 'OK'.

Now of course it can't send the receipt, and it's not ni the Outbox.

How do I get rid of it ?

Oh, and any 'new' suggestions for getting email to work (Bill G are you
listening ?) more than welcome.

Thanks

Thanks Dave,

Yes, I meant I could receive but NOT send.

The instructions from Orange are somewhat misleading, if I follow them to
the lletter I end up with all the mail frmo all the emil addresses set up at
that freeserve account.

It still doesn't let me send.

Previous suugestions have been remove McAfee completely but unless someone
can give me a coherent argument why a well known branded antivirus software
and firewall package will not work with another well known email client I'm
loathe to do it.

As I am equally loathe to upgrade to Office 2005 just so it costs me more to
have the sma problems.

The primary reason to remove it is to rule McAfee out as the source of the
issue. *By the way, if you go to Google and select Group search and type
McAfee or McAfee Problems, you might find several arguments for permanently
removing it, I'm only suggesting you do it temporarily to rule it out as the
source of the problem. You will need to use the removal tool or
instructions at the McAfee website to be sure it is completely removed.

If you still have the problem after removing McAfee, it's likely the problem
is somewhere in the account setup, either the server information for
freeserve is incorrect or there are additional settings necessary in order
to get freeserve to work properly.

Ok Mark,

I'm not familiar with Freeserve, but failure to send can be due to several
things.
1. Is your Outgoing (SMTP) server set to smtp.orangehome.co.uk as their
support page indicates?
2. Some ISP's use different port numbers, but it looks like yours uses 25,
which is standard.
3. Are you on Freeserve's network when you try to send? People with laptops
sometimes try to send email when they are out and about, connected to a
wireless access point, and many ISP's won't allow a non-network computer to
utilize their email server.
4. Is there more to the error message? Because "POP" indicates a sending
error, not receiving.

I suppose you followed these directions.....

Yes it's a sendng error, no it's not wireless and broadband is provided by BT.

Yes, the settings are as per Orange instructions.

Yes, McAfee support tried altering the port settings too, and even stopping
the mcafee services.

McAfee was bundled free for three years by Dell, I'm reluctant to remove it
as i don't have any installation cd's.

McAfee support were oblivious to this being a problem relating to their
product, mind you I had to constantly remind them they were dealing with
vista not XP, and Outlook not Outlok Express so....

As the evening's worn on, I've found it's the auto receipt sending i'd like
to knock on the head.

Any suggestions to resolve that ? I've deleted the mail that requested the
receipt but that hasn't helped, nothing in the outbox.
