Outlook 2002 phantom messages being sent

My email account is generally OK, I can send and receive email normally.
However, recently (in the past few weeks) I have noticed that the send /
receive dialog box is telling me that I am sending a number of messages when
I know I do not have any in my outbox. Nothing appears in my sent items
folder.
I have read the other threads about phantom emails and I have checked the
read receipt setting on my client, and it is set correctly, so I know they
are not automatic read receipts.
I have noticed that the outgoing phantom messages always occur, if they do
occur, on the next send / receive after I receive some spam. I am worried
that I am getting spam that contains a virus. I run NOD32 as my anti virus,
but have this week also tried the free versions of AVG, Ad-aware and
Trendmicro Housecall, and none of them can find anything to report. I am
reporting this as a seperate question because, unlike the other questions, in
my case, my genuine email is working fine.

There is anecdotal evidence that a recent Office update may be the cause and
Outlook is sending
"not read" receipts. From what I've read, Microsoft has been informed of
the issue via an incident report.
 
Thanks for the advice. Because this is anecdotal, I hope you don't mind if I
keep this open. I can say that I have only had this problem for a few weeks,
which is consistent with your update theory. However, Outlook 2002 is in
"support only" modes these days, so I am not sure they are updating it, which
is not supportive of the anecdotal theory. However, I really do appreciate
you taking time to post the reply.

Since messages posted to this newsgroup do not constitute support incidents
and since I don't work for Microsoft, you're free to leave these mesasges
here as long as you wish. No one from Microsoft is likely to see it,
however.
