Phantom messages in Outlook 2003 Outbox

I've been having a problem lately with Outlook 2003 not sending messages. I
am able to receive but not send. Whenever I select the Send/Receive button I
see a message in the lower-right pane saying "Sending message 1 of 5" even
though I only have 1 message to send. It appears there are 4 phantom
messages that are clogging up the system.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
