Messages won't send in Outlook 2003

I cannot get messsages to send in Outlook 2003. I can receive messages but
not send. I recently deleted some read receipts that were hanging up the
system but they are now gone.

I checked with my provider (comcast) and am using the correct server to send
messages. Any idea what it might be?

Do you receive any error messages when trying to send?
 
Yes, I get a message that says that it is unable to connect to the smtp
server. I checked the settings with Comcast and they use smtp.comcast.net.
I've used this setting for a year or more without problems.

Could this be related to the read receipts that I recently deleted?

Are you connecting to the correct port? Is that port allowed through your
firewall?
