Outlook 2002 closes when attempting to open new received email mes

I use Windows xp Home SP2, with Office xp Pro with SP3 update, and Norton
Internet Security 2004 on an ACER 1710 laptop computer.
When I open Microsoft Outlook 2002 mail messages download OK.
Then when I attempt to open any e-mail message (read or unread)it results in
an error message:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\PROGA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\Outlook.exe

Abnormal Program Termination
OK
A click on OK results in Outlook closing.

If, upon opening Outlook, the first function is to create a new message,
reply to a message or forward a message Outlook operates normally and there
are no errors of any kind even when opening new messages.

In addition, occasionally while browsing the internet and downloading files
with outlook open I will get an “apphung†error.
I have browsed in these postings but have been unable to find anything that
explains this problem.
Can anyone help me with this? All assistance will be greatly appreciated.

If you have the original source media for Office XP, you can open
Outlook - Click Help and from the sub-options, left Detect & Repair.
Since Office isn't protected like Windows with Windows File Prot.,
it's possible something in the Office components is "Out-of-Whack".
If after the repair, you still experience problems I'd be inclined to
point the finger at NIS-2004 as the culprit. You might need to get
an updated version of Live Update. For some reason, LU updates
everything but itself. Afterwards, Run the newer Live Update until all
available patches are applied (Update-Boot-Update-Boot.....)

This is the first new information regarding this problem I have received,
even with the assistance I was getting from Microsoft. I will try this
procedure and post the results soon.
