My Outlook appears to be corrupted. How do uninstall & reinstall Outlook
from the Office 2000 CD? And what should I do to make sure I don't delete
any files such .pst & .pab files.

Here is the background.
I keep getting the error: "can't connect to server error" or "connection to
server failed" or "connection to server was unexpectedly terminated". The
most common error # is 0x800ccc0e.

Sometimes I can download message but can't send them (outgoing mail server
problem) and sometimes I can send messages but can't download messages
(incoming mail server problem). And sometimes when I click on Send/Receive,
nothing happens (i.e. there is no action by Outlook such as connecting to
server etc) and no error is reported.

After restarting (sometimes after many restarts) the computer the Outlook
starts working but only for a while and then restarting the computer cycle
begins all over again....

I did all the steps outlined in the Microsoft's article on this as well as
getting help from my ISP but it has not fixed the problem permanently? I am
using port 587 for outgoing mail and 110 for incoming mail. I am not on a
large corporate network. There are only 3 computers connected on my
network. This problem has not occurred on the other 2 computers. So I can
only blame it on the Outlook on my computer.

Thanks for your help.

Are you using your AV to scan in and outgoing emails. If so uninstall your AV and
then re-install it without the email integration (scanning) option. Post back and
tell us if your issue was solved

Yes, I am. But wouldn't just removing the "email scan" option in the AV
work just as well? And why my Outlook has suddenly started malfunctioning
after working fine for the past 8 years or so? Is the latest Norton AV to
blame for it?

Anyway, how does one uninstall & reinstall Outlook from the Office 2000 CD?
Thanks.

Disabling email scan in the AV software or disabling the outlook addin for
av scanning isn't always effective because the AV software hooks into the
mail API, not outlook. In this case, the AV software needs uninstalled and
reinstalled without the option for mail integration enabled. Note that some
of the newer AV software doesn't allow you to not install integration, only
disable it. (And when its disabled, it keeps reminding you that its
disabled.)

Did you install an update for the AV software or new AV software right
before the problem started? Norton and AVG are known to have issues with
email scanning.

To uninstall outlook or office, go to Control panel, Add/Remove programs and
either uninstall or repair office. FWIW, uninstalling/reinstalling rarely
fixes problems than a repair install can't.

Hi,

If you have problems with pst file, you can try a tool called
Advanced Outlook Repair. You can download a free demo version at
http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe . I think it is a useful repair
tool for you. It is easy to recover your PST file by using its wizard.
It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects
