Outlook 2000 Does Not Close

We have Outlook 2000 (Microsoft Office 2000 Professional) running on Windows
2000 Professional. When we closed Outlook by hitting the "X" on upper
right corner, Outlook displayed this message on the screen "Please wait
while Microsoft Outlook exits". This message will stay on forever. We
have to go to Task Manager to delete it. Can you think of any reason why
Outlook does not close? We do not have problems of closing Outlook 2003.
Thanks.

Are you opening the same mailbox using both Outlook 2000 and 2003? There's
an extra free/busy field used in Outlook 2003 that will prevent Outlook 2000
from closing if that's the case. If so, open your Outlook 2000 with the
/cleanfreebusy switch and you should be able to close Outlook 2000. BTW, to
properly close down Outlook 2000 you should be using File, Exit and Log Off
and not the X at the top right.

You are correct. I open my mailbox using both Outlook 2000 and 2003.

Your instructions fixed the problem. Thank you very much for solving the
mystery.

Dear Ken Slovak,

I've got the same problem, but still not solved yet.
I didn't get you very much for this words:
"If so, open your Outlook 2000 with the
/cleanfreebusy switch and you should be able to close Outlook 2000."

Please hlep! Many Thans!

Ken,
Thanks very much. I did open my mail using Outlook 2003 client and I
only had to run the command once and I was able to close Outlook 2000 within
3 seconds on all the computers I was troubleshooting this problem. It really
help because I was moving users onto a new server and when I noticed my
Outlook would not close.

I ran into the exact same problem recently when having to load the original Office 2000 version on some older Windows XP client workstations. I had to update Office 2000 to level SP3, plus install the Outlook post SP3 hotfix too, which is available as a special download from Microsoft. Nothing else that I had already tried worked to get rid of the problem, including uninstalling/reinstalling Office 2000 and/or reapplying Windows XP SP3. The confusing part was that the Office 2000 SR-1 update is no longer available from Microsoft; the Office 2000 SR-1 downloader file still exists, but the actual installation files on the backend do not, so I had to find them from another download site on the web; the download filename was O2KSR1aDL (51.3 MB in size). You can still find it out there if you seach on just the filename. SP3 is still available from Microsoft, and it is all inclusive for SP2. The Outlook 2000 post SP3 hotfix is available for free from Microsoft via an email link from them. Also, the updates need to be installed in sequential order: SR-1, SP3, and then the post SP3 hotfix. Outlook worked perfectly afterwards for us...
