Outlook 03, multiple .pst files

Scott_VT

Howdy,

After upgrading to 03 from 02, adding the MS .pst backup addin, and adding
..pst(s) from my old laptop ('02) via an external HD, I have found myself
with 8 .pst files.

They are as follows (in default docs & settings):

archive backup.pst 5.82mb
archive .pst 5.82mb
outlook1.pst 281kb
outlook backup.pst 401kb
outlook.pst 401kb
outlookyahoo-00000006.pst 281kb

and 2 in 'my documents':

outlook backup backup1127.pst 1.46mb
outlook backup.pst 1.49mb

OK, so I'd like to backup to my external HD every so often. Should I save
ALL these files? Is this 'normal to have this many .pst's?

Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott,

Well "normal"... it is possible to have this many pst-files only you can
decide whether or not they are needed. You can connect to the files (if you
are not already) by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File... and check what is in
them.

If you've found the ones you need you can back-up them as often as you like

Hi,

I've just had a major laptop crash and need to re-install the operating system. I've moved all of the "My documents" folder off of the laptop but I do need to also get all of the e-mails, calender, contacts etc that will be contained in the .pst file. I can find only 1 pst file on the computer and this is called archive.pst. It's file details suggest that it was created on the 16 June at 11.03 pm which will be approximately the last time the laptop worked properly the crash.

How likely is it that this archive.pst file will contain all of my Outlook data?

It is possible to read this file in some way to re-assure myself?

My wife has Outlook 2003 installed on her pc. Can I read my archive.pst file on her machine without affecting her own copy?

Regards,

Phil

Yes, to connect to it choose File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

Normally the archive.pst doesn't hold your current items but only the ones
you've archived.

Make sure you include hidden and system files and folders when searching for
pst-file.

By default it is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

You can also locate the file by using
Rightclick the root folder (probably Outlook Today)-> Properties-> button
Advanced-> field Filename
