Outlook '03 disappears from quick launch bar

Anyone have any idea why, suddenly in the last 2 weeks, when I click on the
desktop icon, my Outlook disappears from the quicklaunch bar, but doesn't
close. When I click on the icon to "reopen" it, apparently it has been open
all the time, but the icon just fell off the quick launch bar. Very wierd
and new. I've had this version for at least a year.

You mean the Taskbar, not the Quick Launch Toolbar, right? Do you still see
the Outlook icon in the Notification Area? Then it minimized to tray.
Rightclick it and deselect; Hide when minimized.
