Outline numbering does not go past 1.

I use word 2003 on xp professional. Recently following problem occurs.

My usual number is 1 1.1 and so forth. Then if I go to left, it goes to 2,
and subparagraphs repeat.

Present Problem: I press format, bullets and numbering, outline numbering
third from left, and it inserts 1 like it's supposed to. Each time I press
enter, it repeats "1." instead of inserting 2. then 3. etc. What is fix.

It seems as if the "1" has been typed in rather than inserted as an
outline number. In the Customize Outline Numbered List box, look in the
"Number format" box. Anything that is not displayed on a grey background
has been typed in.

If you find a number that has been typed in, delete it. Add the correct
one for the current level by making a selection in the "Number style"
box. Add a higher level number (if applicable) from the "Previous level
number" box.

Note that it might be easier to just delete the contents of the "Number
format" box and start fresh, carefully inserting the necessary numbers
and typing the period(s).
