Others can't read my .docx when i email documents. How to fix?

I run a small playgroup and email newsletters (saved as word documents). When
I email them, the document is saved as .docx which some people can't open.
How do I fix this problem?

Save the documents in Word 97-2003 format or convert them to PDF.
