other ideas for missing drives?

I have this problem of "losing" my cd drives. It happens
after a windows update (my theory). In the past I have
associated it with my burning of discs, but now I had my
com looked over and redone. This time, unlike in the
past, the drives have not "just reappeared". I know it
sounds strange, but that's a HP com for ya! Nothing but
trouble since I got it.
Here is what I have tried: Reg edit, device mgr (not
there), reboot, reinstall (xp pro), search and destroy,
norton 2003.
any sug?

Oh, the cd rom will open. is not recognized, and won't
play. The cdr-dvd will not open, and dito to the rest.
In the past neither have opened or worked...or recognized.

help!

Added:

I went to nero and got the latest in "fixes and updates"
I applied all, but no use even after reboot. (my version
was not that old)

I tried tweakui, but it will not run on a something"32"
system.

A friendly person on this NG replied:

tried this?
Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values
completely from the
following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}
been there, but there are no filters...not 0 for a value,
but really, there just is not upper and lower filters.
Ideas?

It isn't the HP computer it is the Microsoft Updates
causing the problems. I am positive about that. I
haven't lost my drives after the updates but other things
are acting totally crazy especially the control panel. I
believe there is a problem with the updates and Microsoft
needs to look into this.

Have you tried looking at your BIOS?
That is where they need to be regognised first.
