OT: recommended Virtual PC software

Hi,

Was hoping to get some recommended VM software from those who uses them a
lot. I know MS has their version Virtual PC 2004 and know there is VMware,
but wanted to know about others. I have seen some in action and would like
to use one on my work computer so I can install Linux, Solaris 10, another
XP Pro SP2 and unfortunately Win98SE, so your recommendations, especially
with your Pro`s and Con`s about each program would be appreciated. Thanks

Before you buy a 'Virtual PC' you must determine what is you 'real' operating
system / CPU. Are we looking at Win/Intel; Linux/Intel or OSX/Motorola or
what?

Then you should decidie which Virutal PC you wish to 'emulate' under what
'real' Operating System.

This will really narrow down the search field and possible choices.

So for an Mac user; they may want to have Windows 'Virtual Machine' or:
Linux on Intel, they may want to have Windows 'Virtual Machine'

and so on.

Decide from where you want to start your journey and the choice of road can
then be made. Without a starting point no journey can be undertaken.

Hi Bar,

The programs that I will emulate is Red Hat Linux 9.0, Fedora Core 3,
Solaris 10 (x86 based), XP Pro SP2, Win98SE. The system I am using is P4
2.8 GHz, with 1 GB RAM, 80Gig HDD, with XP Pro SP2 installed. I know there
are several different vendors out there that produces VM software, but want
to review other peoples recommendations before having my company purchase a
license for me. Thanks

I have MS Virtual PC 2004. For Virtual PC's I have Windows for Workgroups
3.1, 95, ME, 2000 Pro, and Red Hat 9.0. My host machine is an Athlon 2400+
with a gig of ram running XP-SP2. All the Virtual PC's run amazingly well.
I have not been able to get the sound to work in Linux. Actually none of
these are anything I really need. I just wanted to see if I could do it!

I believe that VMware is now UVirtual PC. Microsoft bought out
VMware???

No, MS bought Connectix. VMWare is apparently still out there:
http://www.vmware.com/

I use Virtual PC 2004 on a host machine running XP Pro SP2 w/512MB RAM.
I've got DOS, Win3.1, Win95, Win98, and OS/2 running. I like it a lot
but I can't help you make the decision since I've not used VMWare. VPC
offers a trial version, so you might want to d/l it and take it for a
spin.
