[OT] k8vt800 won't boot

Hi,

I've just bought and assembled
a K8VT800 with an Athlon 64 3000+
but upon powering up, the power
comes on, as does the hard disk
light but thats how it stays,
and the hard disk light stays on.

It doesnt beep for the BIOS,
it just spins the fans of the
graphics card, the power supply
and the hard disks but doesn't
do anything else.

I've tried various ribbon cables
and two graphics cards but it
doesn't make any difference.

I've got the hard disks
connected to IDE1 and the
CDROM connected to IDE2.

Anyone know what the problem
might be?

Radeon 9700 Pro
512mb DDR PC2100
Soundblaster Audigy
56k modem
80gb primary hard disk
8gb secondary hard disk
Samsung SM-352 CDROM

It probably doesn't like your ddr stick... You didn't say, is it one stick
of 512mb? Have you tried powering up without the ram in? If it is the ram
then you will get the no ram beeping. Easiest way to tell. Also, what
version of the bios does it have? Of course, you may not be able to tell
that until you post. Check the ram compatibility first...

try the booting with no ram and see what it does.

Thanks for your input.

Hopefully, you will debug this...

It is usually unsupported ram timings that are the issue...

hehe. that's too funny. I just spent over a day trying to figure out
exactly the same thing. I felt a bit dumb after I figured it out.
In most likelihood, you didn't plug in your auxiliary power cable into the
motherboard. It's a 4 pin connector that comes out of your power supply and
it plugs into a socket at the top left corner of the mobo. There is a page
dedicated to this in the mobo's manual. This extra power connector is
designed to channel more power to the CPU than the ATX connection already
supplies

The mobo has an onboard sound card. if you were to plug in your headphones
to it and boot the system, you'd hear a female voice telling you that the
system CPU test failed. Once you plug in the connector, you should be able
to boot.

if you have an old power supply, it might not have that 4 pin auxiliary
connector. If that's the case, you'll need a new power supply

As far as the absent BIOS beep is concerned, mine wasn't there either until
I updated the mobo's bios.

btw, this is probably the wrong group to be posting this question, but
personally I don't care

Buy this man a drink - no, buy this man a pub!

You're a star, I looked at my power supply and didnt have the
four pin cable required for that connection. I swapped the
power supply for a friends that had the cable, plugged it into
the motherboard and all was well.

I would of sent the CPU back for sure thinking it was defective.

Thanks so much for your advice.

Mart.
