I have just installed Zone Alarms 6.1 Interenet Security suite on
windows XP professional. The only change I have made in the last month
and now when I open windows task manager it has multiple outlook.exes
running in the background eating up memory. Is there something to fix
this? Is this just a problem with ZA and Outlook 2003. I did not
notice it when I was using Kerio/Avast with Outlook 20003.

Thank you,

Skywalker

Could be. Does ZoneAlarm integrate with Outlook? If so; does Outlook work
correctly when you disable this integration? Again, if so; contact ZoneAlarm
support.

I tried it both ways and what I find out is if Outlook 2003 is
minimized when it checks for mail it opens another outlook.exe and
takes up memory. Is there way to fix this other than not minimize it
to reduce the orphans and the amount of memory Outlook 2003 is using?

Thank you,

Skwyalker

That is not normal Outlook behavior so something is preventing Outlook to
run normally. What other add-ins do you have running? Does everything work
correctly when you start Outlook with the /safe switch?

I do have incredimail addon for outlook but it has its own exe. How do
I start outlook in the /safe switch mode to test it?

Thank you,
Skywalker

start->run->outlook.exe /safe (Note the space before the /)

I opened it in safe mode and let it sit for 1 hour minimized. I had 6
outlook.exes with 15,080K in memory each.

Looking for some suggestions.

I am running Outlook 2003 with Windows Professional SP2. I am
surprised I am the only one who has ever run into this problem. Any
recommended solutions would be great.

I just did a search of my computer and found 3 outlook.exe's on my
computer. Two of them are in a directory called C\windows\prefetch.
Is this normal or is this part of the problem with the multilple exes
running when minimized?

That is normal. The Prefetch folder is for resource optimization of Windows
XP.

Do you have a virusscanner or 3rd party spam-filter that does incoming mail
scanning? If so disable these features/integrations with Outlook and see if
it still happens. Also see if you can determine when a new outlook.exe
process is fired. I'm pretty sure that this happens at send/receive interval
or when a message is actually being delivered.

I do have the anitvirus that came with ZoneAlarms I think it is called
Frontier. It does scan incoming email. I disabled it and when I
minimized outlook I came back after 1 1/2 hours and had 20 outlook.exes
when I pulled up the task manager. I agree with you asessment. It
seems as long as I leave it maximized though it does not create the
outlook.exes. Currently I see the ony two options unless there is
something else you can suggest:
1. Leave outlook maximized
2. Change the send & receive to like an hour or something if I
want to minimize outlook
3. Open for suggestions ???

WE have no idea - you failed to include the original post.

I have this same exact problem. I have ZoneAlarm Suite 6+ and find it
frustrating to have to go in and delete multiple copies of Outlook.exe from
the task manager. I never associated it with the minimization of windows
till I read the other posts.

I have been running ZoneAlarm for some time and this is only a recent
problem. I run the add-s of LookOut and SpamBayes.

Hope you folks have some answers...

Scott
