Ordering of files in File/Open dialog

Suddenly all my applications that use the standard File/Open dialog
now list the files in reverse alphabetical order (Z thorugh A). I
want them in normal alphabetical order (A through Z).

How did this happen and how can I fix it?

I can fix it for one invocation by right clicking and choosing
"Arrange Icons By" but they're reversed next time I run File/Open.
How can I fix it permanently?

I think I fixed it:

Ran Windows Explorer and clicked on the "Name" heading until the
sort was A-Z. Then invoked Tools/Folder Options/View and clicked
"Apply to All Folders."

Was there an easier way?
