ordered the X2 (continued)

P

philo

After doing careful research I ordered all the parts I needed to build my X2
from Monarch Computer.
Even though I spent a lot of time getting the best parts at the best
price...
once I had it all figured out... i quickly placed the order...
only to go: "ooops, I just blew about $40 extra on express shipping!"

Oh well, no biggie.

They emailed last night to say it was about to ship
and I'd get the parts On Tue.

Then today... got the confirmation that the parts had shipped...
and the *back ordered* parts would ship as soon as possible.

Sure glad I paid for rush delivery !!!

With a company like that I'd send it all back.
The bastards could have taken the trouble to contact you when they saw you'd
paid for express shipping and they didn't have all the pieces to send you at
once.

Considering I was foolish enough to have gone with express freight...
rather than reading the options ...I was going to let it pass...but maybe I
should email them
with a complaint.
But it was not a big enough error for me to send it all back.
Even if they'd take it back...I'd still have to pay freight to return it!

Many top line companies over the past few years have made great efforts to
ship their merchandise out within one to two business days, learning this
concept from Newegg.com, and other online companies, and that it pays in
great customer satisfaction without charging additional money.
When you have indicated (even through error) that you are willing to
spend an extra $40 to get those parts to you as fast as possible then the
company should take special note to let you know that it's an impossibilty
because of backordered parts. They should make the effort to give you the
option, even for a short period of time, to change your mind either by
calling you or at least sending you an e-mail.
It certainly would be a good start by registering a complaint to them
that the $40 express shipping should be refunded to you since they couldn't
fulfill their end.
I understand too that your parts amount to a substantial mount of money
and they probably have a minimum of a 15% restocking fee, should you
consider sending it all back, so you may have to suffer with the wait as
well as the loss of the additional money you spent. A good company would
refund that money to you as well as apologize.

These are good reasons to only shop where there's realtime
inventory updates so you have a reasonable expectation all
the parts are available. Biggest problem isn't so much the
rush of getting it all and building the system, it's the
timing of the vendor warranty as when there's a problem
beyond the vendor warranty and the part goes to the
manufacturer, it can take quite a bit longer, even months
sometimes, to get a replacement back.

I would've shot them an email though, immediately after you
placed the order. It's likely they couldn't do anything
about, a typical claim is "it's all automated and already
filled at the warehouse", which basically just means they
are drop-shipping and can't be bothered to change it unless
it was a profit for them enough to do so, but regardless,
it's worth the 20 seconds to send the email sometimes.

well fwiw, i did email them...
but i won't consider this too big of a deal unless
it takes them a long time to supply the back ordered stuff...
anyway...since it took me a few months to get around to ordering things
it's not really a big deal...

here is one observation on human nature:

many years ago i bought a house.
after living there for over ten year...i one day looked up
and noticed that in the bathroom...there was just a bare bulb...
no light fixture...

so i quickly drove over to the closest hardware store...
but they did not have one of the type i needed...
But they said they were getting a new shipment in within
the next two days...

Well I just stormed out of there and went somewhere else...
as I needed it right away!
It was an emergency after all!!!! <G>

Anyway...this X2 is no emergency...
it will be my first computer luxury ever...
(too bad it's for my girlfriend and not for me)

Use the time to download \(order CD) the trial version of WindowsXP x64,
if you don't have it already. You want to install it last if you are
dual booting with WindowsXP 32bit, but you could have it on hand when
you build the system.

Geez if Id known you hadnt ordered it yet I would have mentioned the
Dell deal when we were discussing it in the other thread. No big deal
in the long run though - its $241 through them with coupon.

I was going to order my opteron through monarch because they had the
best price for it until everyone jacked up the price on them including
monarch.

The Dell deal was the killer deal on the X2 though. Unfortunately
theres a delay on them on so Im not sure youd want to go with them
anyway. Mine says 2/8 sched shipping but a lot of people are saying it
may take longer than that. Im not in a super rush to get it so it
doesnt bother me though and some say you can get more disc coupons
when theres a delay from Dell.

Better yet, take the opportunity to dump all forms of Windoze and
the impossible EULA, and switch to Linux. Do you really want to
give Micro$loth the right to take anything off your computer they
don't like, to poke about in it, and to insist you pay them for
buggy updates?

Theyve been selling them for a few months I think. No opterons though.
Its actually 300+ or so but theres a 25% off coupon going around from
them. Im not sure who is getting them some say its random if you
signed up for an account by them through the Small Bus side not the
Home /Home Office side. Some people are buying the 25% off coupons off
ebay though you might see them around the net. Someone was cool enough
to give me one so I used it. Have no idea when the coupon expires
though I just jumped on the deal as soon as I heard about it.

Theres renewed buzz though there always is about DELL possibly using
AMDs in their PCs finally but they keep denying it. I think one of the
areas they are getting killed is with servers since the opterons are
cheaper and theres talk AMD is going to aggressively slash OPteron
prices --- the higher end ones not the 165 probably since they just
RAISED that one, to weight the INTEL vs AMD choice even stronger
towards AMDs side.

Like I said though theres talk of big possible delays. Dell has in the
past had incredible delays for some items if they get deluged by
orders. I remember people waiting months for some cameras though the
price was so low it was worth the wait for them. Mines supposedly
coming 1-2 weeks. Some people have mentioned maybe one month delays
but its all speculation.

its funny several months ago I said my target price around Jan would
be $240 and laughed at the notion since the prices were like 359-399
then but thats exactly what happened.

I said I wanted a DSLR around the 500 range and there actually have
been deals recently close to that too but I bought other junk lately
so Im overbudget. My goal is still $400-500 DSLR canon or nikon in the
next few months.

I may actually end up getting close to crossing most things off my
must get list. Everytime you do though something new comes out so you
always have 6-10 items on it. Like the M2 thats a wild card but since
im getting the X2 I defintely wont get that until summer the earliest
if its even out then though some articles last year mentioned 1rst qtr
of this year - no way is it coming out that fast.

I guess ribbon tweeters are what I want now , maybe HDTV card/7800GT
if that area starts heating up.

Some people have posted they got a Opteron 165 cheap at Monarch two
months or so ago. That sounded like a killer deal too since theyve
jacked up the price everywhere now.

Its DEAD. I just saw that the coupon deadline was 1/25 so you cant get
it anymore. I guess all you can do is hope for another DELL deal
soon.

You can also use the time checking for drivers! :)

Even though I've never had any problems...
backups are always a good idea...so
right now I've told my girlfriend to burn everything she has to DVD's...
I doubt she will have it done before all the parts get here.

I use Windows and Linux about 50 -50 (use Gimp btw)
but the machine is for my girlfriend...
and she uses it about 99% for Photoshop

I should mention that I'm triple booting WinXP32, WinXPx64 and Linux
SUSE 10. They're a few things Windows does better, and I need both OS's
to check out various client's applications. If you don't install Linux
last, Microsoft will wipe out GRUB on the MBR. That's really grabby! :-(
