Optical mouse problems

When I boot with my M$ Wheel Mouse Optical plugged into a usb port. Windows
gets to the splash screen checks the floppy drive and dvdrom. Then it
pauses for about a 40 seconds. When it finnishes booting the mouse is
disabled. I find if I unplug it and re-plug the mouse it works. It pong-
ping's and ping-pong's on pluging and unpluging. The light on the mouse
stays on until the hang.

I have and Asrock KMVM2 mainboard with a Via chipset all the correct
drivers are installed. 4in1 1.51 Asrock's ECHI USB 2.0 drivers

It works fine if I use a PS2 adaptor.

I am using Windows XP Home.

It worked fine up until recently. It is so damn annoying.

If you need more info tell what you need and I will post it.

Any changes in the bios? Bios set to load USB devices
(keyboard / mouse) during start up?

Keyboard is PS2 style so no problems there. There are no bios errors. The
mouse lights up during BIOS POST checks.

I tryed safe mode It works fine. No hang. No need to re-pluging.
This problem only affects stuff plugged in during boot.
I made a boot log. I cannot see any problems in there. This was working
prior to a critical update a few days ago. I have no system restore point.
I definately cannot uninstall.

I had a rumage in the BIOS.

I turned off some stuff I am not using(onboard sound, modem, VGA graphics
and printer/serial ports. I also enabled USD legacy support now it works. I
did not need this before. I am suprised I need it now cause the mouse is
not very old and made by M$.

It has nothing to do with MS.

It's all in your motherboard support. Since there are no USB drivers loaded
before the OS starts (i.e. Windows or whatever), your USB devices are
dependent on your motherboard to provide some sort of support so that they
will work outside of your OS (i.e. before it loads). As such, motherboard
manufacturers typically allow the motherboard to emulate USB keyboards and
mice as PS/2 device (the legacy modes for USB keyboard and mice).

If your motherboard has this support and you enable it (or have it set to
automatic), your USB keyboard and/or mice will work when no USB drivers are
loaded by the OS. Otherwise, it won't.

The mouse manufacturer has nothing to do with it.

The mouse manufacturer and OS manufacturer are the same. The problem did
not start until M$ released a critical update. I also found that it was not
the legacy usb support problem. I think it was just me not disabling unused
mainboard devices. However it worked fine with all the devices enabled
before the patch.

The BIOS had no problem detecting the usb mouse and providing it with
power.

I thought windows boot up sequence tested all available devices and ignored
the BIOS almost completely.
