HP optical mouse freezes

I'm using an HP 4-button optical mouse that plugs into my USB port. I've had
this mouse for about 5 months and had no problems whatsoever until about 5
days ago. Now it freezes up frequently and refuses to respond. A couple of
times I've gotten an error message saying that Windows did not recognize my
USB device. I've read thru the posts here and have tried all the
suggestions, but nothing works. I have downloaded new driver updates but it
doesn't help. Under Mouse Properties, it has the location marked as 0. I
don't know if that means anything or not. If I unplug the mouse, then plug
it back in, it comes back to life.

Can anyone please suggest a fix before I commit rodentacide?

Do you have any other mice to test with ? It could be something
like a broken wire in the mouse cable, like where the wire
enters the mouse housing.

In a question a couple of posts up, they discuss the Power
Management features of the mouse in Device Manager. Untick
the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
box.

I tried the Power Management option under the Device Manager and it was
disabled, so that's not the problem. But I do have another mouse that is PS2
instead of USB and it seems to be working fine. It might be that there's a
problem with my USB port, but I've had several people tell me that there
optical mice have bitten the dust after about 4-5 months, so you might be
right and there are some damaged or broken wires in the cable.

Anyway, the PS2 mouse is working fine, so I'm assuming for now that the old
USB mouse was damaged somehow.

Thanks for your help.
