Optical Drive Not Recognizing Disk Change Volume Label

S

Running XP SP3 on a system with 2 DVD-R/W optical drives (Q: & R:). After
booting up 'Q' shows the volume label of the disk inserted the first time.
Any subsequent disk inserted continues to show the initial disk's label
until the system is rebooted. 'R' doesn't indicate a volume label ever. It
shows 'DVD-RAM Drive' no matter if a disk is in the drive or not. Is there a
Registry setting that could be changed to correct this issue?

Hi SoCalCommie,
Open the Run box and paste in the following
(it's rather long and when posted, the line-wrap will distort it - be sure
to get it all in as one line)

reg DELETE
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\CPC\Volume
/f

This will clear the volume information that is effectively "cached" to the
registry. The 'stuck' labels and icons on drives that no longer represent
what is in them should disappear on logoff/logon.

Thanks, that solved half of the problem (the 'phantom' volume label
disappeared from the 'Q' drive), but the 'R' drive still doesn't show a
volume label when a disk is inserted. Any other thoughts?

Hi SoCalCommie,
Go into your "Administrative Tools" menu on the
start menu and click on "Local Computer Services" look down the list for
item "Logical Disk Manager" is this disabled? If it's service status is
"started" and startup-type is "manual" then that is how it should be so it's
not that. However, if it is either status -"stopped" or start-type -
"disabled", then change it to start-type - "Automatic" and press the "start"
button to start this service. It's just a thought that the absence of this
service, while not essential, may well produce the side-effects of not
displaying volume information (such as volume labels). If not, I'll try and
rack my brains again...

The service was running and is set to automatic so I don't think it's the
problem. Try some more racking... you're on a roll. :)

THE PROBLEM IS FIXED!!!

Turns out, it has to do with the autoplay function in Windows XP. Microsoft
has a repair tool at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&displaylang=en

It's a small executable (77 kB) called autofix.exe. It may need to be run
multiple times (for each affected drive) with reboots in between, but it
does work! Thanks for your effort.
