Missing Volume Label and Drive Letters

T

Tom

Hello,

I am using Windows XP Pro. I recently installed a 120GB USB HD. It
was assigned the Drive Letter F, which I later changed to M. My boot
HD is C.

The Drive Letters and Volume Labels are correct in Windows Explorer.
They show up as Local Disk (C:) and WD USB 2 (M:). However, when
viewed in Disk Management, the Volume Label and Drive Letter are
missing for Drive C, while the Drive Letter is missing for Drive M.
Other than this, both drives seem to be functioning properly. I was
able to do a complete backup of the C drive to the new USB drive, with
no problem.

Before I installed the USB drive the Volume Label and Drive Letter for
Local Disk (C:) displayed correctly in Disk Management.

Background: I ran into trouble when I first installed the USB HD.
During file transfer, the computer would hang up. After researching
the subject on the web, I upgraded my pc to USB 2, which eliminated the
file transfer problem. However, in order to successfully install the
USB drive, I had to do a System Restore to a point prior to my first
attempt at installing it.

Should I be worried that the Volume Label and Drive Letters are missing
in Disk Management? I have tried to renew the Drive Letters via Disk
Management, to no avail. I have also tried the Refresh and Rescan
Disks commands, with no success. I have searched all over for a
solution, but without success. Could someone please enlighten me?

TIA,

Tom.
