"Operating System Not Found" Problem

I

Infnet

We had just experienced our Toshiba laptop being stuck on start-up
with the "Operating System Not Found" error, and we believe it's
caused by SP2.

About a month after we installed SP2,, we would get this error
message 'on occasion' with the booting, this believing it was just a
temporary 'glitch' in the system...

THEN it was apparent that the error message was indeed stapled
with NO resolve going into BIOS SETUP -
- no resolve as it would NOT boot the XP full-version disk from
CD-ROM!

We had no choice but to use the ONLY method that worked being the
recovery disks and start from scratch, erasing the hard drive...

Anyone else experience this simular problem as of late?

Didn't Microsoft post a recent download to correct this?

...and is there a process to put on the SYSTEM a recovery mode
for future use in case this thing happens again?

Thanks,
Infnet

The "Operating System Not Found" message error is not caused by SP2.
Read the following:

** BULLS**T **

It says that:
"Use the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM to start your
computer. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R" to
repair..."

WHAT FLOPPY DISKS and WHAT CD-ROM are they friggin' talking about??

Geez, Microsoft makes it so damn confusing to differentiate
between using either a XP OS Disk, or the UPGRADE disk, or WHAT?

Incidently, using a full-version or upgrade XP disk would have NOT
solved
the pronlem, right?

We believe it IS a glitch caused by SP2 and we will go to the ends of
the earth
in proving so....don't just TELL US it's not man...

Using your Windows XP CD, perform a "Repair Install".

Hi!

Yes, facing this same 2nd R missing symptom when trying to do the WinXP
reinstall.

Thanks for the link to the Michael Stevens pages. Will be checking next
week at a client site if these hints do work.

By the way, do all this have anything to do with the licence type, OEM or
Upgrade or Full or ...? And, could a Home be repaired with a Pro CD, or vice
versa ...?

Best regards,

Pete V.

Hi!

Tried the Michael Stevens procedure step by step with all the variations,
but didn't get the 2nd R repair alternative, after the Licence acceptance F8,
popping-up to the menu, sorry.

There must still be some other explanation to this "hiding 2nd R" symptom.
Could this all somehow be connected to the OEM Recovery CD of WinXP?

Will be opening also another new thread for this case maybe to get some more
experiences/hints for this.

Best regards,

Pete V.
