no operating system found after xp sp3 update installed

I recently had a message appear at startup: PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
/ 1962: No operating system found. Press F1 to repeat boot sequence. I made
several attempts to restart the system to no avail. I am running a Seagate
40GB hdd with an XP Pro OS. When I replaced the hdd with another Seagate 40GB
hdd the system started fine - UNTIL I updated the system with XP Service Pack
3. Now I am receiving the same message! I tried it in another computer - same
make and model - with same results. It has to be the Windows XP SP3 update
that causes this. I cannot find any information on how to resolve this.

the master boot record
and or the ntfs crashed.

there is a fixmbr command
you can use via the repair/
recovery console method.

however, I would also run
the commands chkdsk and
fixboot for added measure.

if the method above didn't
help, then the ntfs crash is
likely the next thing to look
into.

however, based on my experience
microsoft does not provide a
utility for this.

but what you can use is a
utility called disk director by
acronis.

you can download the trial
ware and it can show you
the contents that are still
in your ntfs and disk.

if so, then your ntfs is repairable
with that program, when you
buy a license.

it’s a good program and I
highly recommend whenever
possible.
