Opera8 browser, nearly freeware.

On balance, I guess I like Opera better than all the others. Development
is ongoing, and it's available for nearly every available platform. Free
versions available, and they work just fine for me.

Thanks for the quick review. I'm really into Portable Firefox at the moment,
so I'll probably stick with that.

Although it walks a fine line between freeware/addware, I have used
the pay version for years...wouldn't use any other browser for
Windows. I really like the KDE longing skin, hehe
Been using Firefox on my Linux box, but I think there is an Opera ver
for Linux ?

Yes there is, but I'm not familiar with it. The linux version is
discussed in opera.general.

Yes, I consider the ongoing development and it's pace an advantage.

Running ver8.01. I've been blocking the ads with my HOSTS file since at
least ver7. I still get the "Buy Opera" nag - not static but it's
hardly noticed. I see no way to turn ads off completely (without
$pending).
you dudes are gonna incite a corliss coronary what with all this
adware talk...

wow. adware *and* cracks! woohoo! corliss is gonna toss a tizzy!
;-)~

No, it's not a crack. It's a launchbar that positons itself over the
ad-banner thus hiding the banner. Also, I seem to recall that
according to the definitions I saw that this is called self-promoWare,
or something like that. Whatever it's called, it's legal, free and a
very good browser with a very good bookmarks manager.

Actually, not really a crack. It's a similarly-sized bar that fits right
over the ad bar, and actually has a use -- a mini-program launcher.

Is it worth persevering with the email client? It just seems so bloody
awkward to use it puts me right off.

You do get used to it, and it doesn't take much time. Yeah, it isn't so
very sophisticated; one can hope they'll work on it a bit more. But it's
usable and learnable.

so you're using a fine os such as linux but are willing to poison it
with opera? didn't make it much past the sixth grade, eh?...

<snip offensive remark>

Perhaps you'd like to give us a reasoned argument for that statement?
Not flaming, just interested.

Hussein, I'm still awaiting a reply on this one. I sometimes use Linux,
with Konqueror browser. Having heard good words about Opera, especially
V8, I'd like to know if there are any serious hangups to using it with
Linux, or whether you were just mouthing off. An early reply would be
appreciated.

The neat thing is that your license allows you to use Opera for Linux
and/or any of the other flavors of the same release level. So in your
particular case, in this particular instance - Opera is truly
freeware! - but lets keep it quiet lest we get busted by the OT cops
:)

Opinions like this is one of the reasons I do not use Linux as my everyday
dekstop OS. However, I do use Opera on all platforms I am on, even my
Symbian, Linux and Windows Smartphone Edition mobile phones.

Thanks ceed, I guess that answers my repeated unanswered queries to
Hussein just above this post.

NP. And to be perfectly clear: Linux IS a fine OS that, among other
things, runs Opera very well.. :)

Well said. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to those kind
of people. I'm sure a lot of them are pretty nice, but that's just a
guess since I never encounter them. Even the VMS community is orders
of magnitude better.
