Who cares? We have the mighty FIREFOX which is light years aheas,
better, faster much secure and OPEN SOURCE. So who needs that poor
closed source excuse of a browser?

Most people get used to an interface and find certain unique features of
use to them. I haven't heard anything about Opera being unsecure.

Who cares, it's not Open Source and it sucks bad. FIREFOX is the best
browser out there and everything else sucks bad.

Installed o90w_8367.exe and it modified this registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet]

and replaced IE and Outlook Express in the startmenu.

Made itself the default mail and browser on the system.

I had selected for it not to install any shortcuts.

Uninstalled Opera and the problem was compounded now there

is no default browser and mail program.

The changes are done on firstrun NOT by the installer.

Then on the second run it asks if you want it to be the default

browser but the change has allready been made.

Bad behaviour in my opinion.

Just tried Beta1 release still making unrequested changes to the
operating system...

Still not undone when uninstalled...

Hope this is fixed before final release.

Can be fixed with set program defaults.

Remember:

Opera 9 Beta is not a final version and may contain bugs. Use it only
on properly backed-up computers.

Also some computers have problems running certain web browsers. For
example, I have 2 computers, one computer runs Firefox without any
problems. My other computer used to be able to run Firefox but it can't
run the newer version even though it has the required requirements, in
fact, Firefox won't even install on the second comp, so I use Opera the
second computer.

I use FF because it's more configurable, but Opera does not
suck.
It renders pages faster than FF in many cases in my
experience.

Bad behaviour in my opinion.

I installed this beta over another beta which I had adjusted to my
preferences.
I was very surprised when the new installation totally ignored all my
settings and other stuff in the profile folder.

For example: I had downloaded 20+ skins in the profile/skins folder.
These skins were not shown in the skins settings, like the new
installation totally ignored everything under the profile folder.

It ignored my toolbars settings and downloaded menu systems, like it
ignored everything under the profile folder.

Very bad installation routine.

It started by lying to me, saying that my old opera installation was in
C/program files/opera, and that folder didn't even exist.

I changed it to D/program files/opera and installed it over another
beta.
....

I downloaded a few new skins, and I see now that it placed them in the
profile/skins folder, together with the 20+ skins I had there already,
but when I look in the settings-skins I only see the new skins I
downloaded, opera cannot see all the other skins that were in that
folder earlier.

I have not been able to restore my toolbar yet, and it will probably be
better to delete this whole crap installation and start over from
scratch.

The best browser in the world should have a better installation routine
than this.

And opera should check which keyboard I use in my win98se operating
system.
It is a swedish keyboard, so opera should use swedish characters, just
like firefox, IE, ultraedit and loads of other program uses.

Now I have to use firefox to discuss in newsgroups, web forums, etc,
because I cannot write swedish characters in opera.

Why can't opera use the correct character table when firefox, mozilla,
ultraedit and many other programs can do that?

I got the reply earlier that opera uses another API than what mozilla
and IE uses.

Now I have to have two web browsers open all the time, firefox to use
swedish characters in discussions, and opera to surf the web with,
because firefox is a hopeless web browser for web surfing.

Check what keyboard the operating system is set to and use the correct
character table for that keyboard!

Just realized I posted this in acf, I wrote it for the opera beta
newsgroup and should have changed the newsgroup before posting.

Oh, well, it doesn't matter.

Opera installation routine is usually a lot better than in this
version, this is a temporary mistake, they will probably fix it in the
next release. I have never seen so many complaints about the Opera
installation routine before.

Opera is still the best web browser, in spite of these problems.

I do.

You sound like those people who needs a political reason to run software..
If that's what you need take a look at how Firefox is currently being
funded by multi-million $ companies like Google. Opera is a publilically
traded company to a large extent owned by it's employees who is making a
decent living out it's closed source. But I guess for it's all about image
and not about the real world for you?

Sigh, there's also something called "open standards", but I guess that
term is too complex and un-hyped?

If you're going to say something about the quality of software it would be
nice if you could let us know why you find something to be is a poor
excuse, or you come across as a poor exccuse as well.

Opera invented most of the features you see in FF today. They are both
great browsers. Opera has some new features coming in version 9 like open
standards widgets (anyone can write them) and Bittorrent support. That's
newsworthy in my opinion.

You can still go back and earlier versions.

I still have versions of Opera 6, 7 and three of Opera 8
installed....plus that early 9....I use Opera 7 for maybe 80% of
everything, and Firefox for most of the rest. I need later Operas for
stuff like Google maps...I will get rid of 2-3 of those eventually,
but NOT Opera 7, which IMHO has the best keyboard features, before
they 'dumbed it down' for 8. One advantage of Opera is that I can run
multiple versions at the same time, where Firefox doesn't seem to
permit my wife's and my copies to be open at the same time.

If Firefox had a few more features that Opera has, and could iron out
a couple of speed issues, I'd finally switch to it totally.

I hadn't installed Preview 8371 my latest version was 8367 and Beta 1
installed over the top without any problems, so far. ;-)
It saved all my Bookmarks, Wand preferences for passwords (which in
most cases is don't ask). All my cookies settings for various sites I
visit also seem to have been saved.

can you customize keyboard shortcuts, mouse gestures, hide menu bar,
localise button bar on left part of the windows, or bookmark panel at the
left, adjust size of GUI icons, set preferences per site, change
user-agent, create personnalised buttons to auto-scroll page, to launch
translator/tinyurl on a page or external application and send selection or
active url to it ?

in what firefox is more configurable ? with many extensions to have Opera
features ?
