Opera 9.0 Beta 1

I hadn't installed Preview 8371 my latest version was 8367 and Beta 1
installed over the top without any problems, so far. ;-)

The most likely reason is that I got the version which uses the new MSI
installer which people have problems with, I should have chosen the old
Opera installer instead.

But it was no catastrophy. I have another Opera installation with
version 8.54 which I am very careful with. This happened to my beta
installation which I use to look at newer versions.
It saved all my Bookmarks, Wand preferences for passwords (which in
most cases is don't ask). All my cookies settings for various sites I
visit also seem to have been saved.

The Opera installer has always behave very well before, and I usually
copy the whole Opera folder as a backup before installing a new version
on top of it.

I have never seen so many complaints about the Opera installation routine

From my reading of the Opera newsgroups, so far, the MSI installer
seems to be attracting most of the complaints. I didn't notice the
link to the old installer on the Australian download page and used the
MSI installer.

That's good, I also have Opera version 8.54 undisturbed since I
installed her.

When installing a Preview or Beta version at one time I would create a
new "Opera" folder and sub folder "Profile" and copy my current
"opera6.adr" file (containing bookmarks) to "Profile" which at least
retained my bookmarks. But since the latest run of 9 Preview versions
including Beta 1 I have installed straight over the top of the
previous without any obvious problems.

can you customize keyboard shortcuts, mouse gestures, hide menu bar,
localise button bar on left part of the windows, or bookmark panel at the
left, adjust size of GUI icons, set preferences per site, change
user-agent, create personnalised buttons to auto-scroll page, to launch
translator/tinyurl on a page or external application and send selection or
active url to it ?
I have no idea, but since those things you mentioned aren't
things I'm interested in, I haven't tried to find out.
in what firefox is more configurable ? with many extensions to have Opera
features ?
I dunno, maybe Opera has features I haven't discovered yet.
But with FF, I use extensions that do the following:

- Block Ads
- Permanently remove certain objects from sites I frequent
- Allow for extensive control over tabs
- incorporate "bug me not" & torrent support
- maintain cookies
- Block flash (Click to play)
- image zoom
- incorporate "tiny url"
- tweak settings
- make every word on a website an interface
- by that I mean;
- if it's an address, link to google/yahoo maps
- look up the words definition
- translate foreign words
- and much more

There's more, but that's a start. Let me know how to do all that in
Opera.

it's, IMHO, easiest than finding extension/installing/updating extensions
in firefox ;-)
