Opens .exe files rather than downloading

I know this is out here somewhere, because I've seen
references elsewhere to others having the problem, but I
can't find it. IE6 has suddenly decided that instead of
prompting to download .exe files, it will try to open
them, sometimes in a new window, and sometimes in the
existing window. If it opens a new window, it stops with a
blank page and a little image placeholder in the upper
left corner. If it tries to open them in the existing
window, basically nothing happens. This one is making me
crazy.

Check you file type association for .exe

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.
