Cannot download .exe

Lynn

I am unable to download any .exe file from the internet.
It looks as if it is downloading then the message "done"
is displayed and a blank screen appears with a little jpeg
like symbol in the upper left corner. Anyone have an idea
why this is happening?

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem, and I've tried to delete
this entry in the registry. a) it doesn't fix the
problem and b) when I restart, the entry is added back
in. Any other ideas? I do not get an ActiveX icon
that's clickable - I get a placeholder icon - for a gif
type image - in the upper left hand corner - on an
otherwise blank page that says Done in the status bar. I
cannot download a file from any website other than the
Windows update site or the Office Update site (both of
which appear to employa a different download
technology). PLEASE HELP! I really need to download a
file to complete a project!! Thanks

Try right clicking the link and then save target as:You can then open the
file by double clicking. Check out this link

Why does Internet Explorer display a blank page with a placeholder icon
instead of displaying a Portable Document Format (.pdf) file with Adobe
Acrobat Reader? I tried it with a .exe file and it worked.

Your description ofr the icon (presumably three colored) is classic
for this problem.
Give details of the plugins you see there.
You may have other items apart for the .exe key under the Extension
key.
Some applications like Netzip will replace the entries and must be
uninstalled.
