IE 6.0 - no download dialog on .exe files

This is similar but not identical to a problem I've seen posted before:
Ever since uninstalling a download manager, clicking on an .exe file does
not offer a download dialog. Rather, I can see network activity as the file
transfers and then I get an image placeholder in a separate browser window.
No options to open/save.

You may have an invalid plugin.

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

I've already attempted this to no avail. I also tried installing another

A reference to Flashget was in the key before I got rid of it. What's in
there now is the GetRight Click Catcher.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
