Trouble downloading files on IE 6.0

G

Guest

I have been experiencing difficulties whenever I try to download files from
internet sites using IE 6.0. My OS Windows XP Professional & Ihave installed
SP2. The download does not start at all: after some time, I get a message
"Internet Explorer cannot download *.exe from *.com. IE was unable to open
this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be
found. Please try again later." What could be the reason for this? I will
provide additional details if required.

Hi Jan Il !

Thanx for prompt response; appreciate it. I tried the first
suggestion-didn't work; haven't restarted the computer.

The second suggestion: I think my system administrator must fix the problem;
I'm only inquisitive> so, I am not inclined to pay a support professional.

The third suggestion, and one link seems closest to my problem: " File
appears to be downloading but is not". I'm about to try & will come back with
next post; right now, I am unable to open "Add/Remove Programs" to remove
Sounds as suggested therein.

Thanks, & see you back soon.

Hi,

Here I am with additional details:

I don't have McAfee or wahtever; I don't have Norton IE Security either.
I've since removed SP2 also & tried. The file I'm tryin is a .exe file. I can
download the same file using Firefox but not IE 6. I further realised that
support from professionals is availbale only for products purchased
separately from the Computer: In my case, it came with the computer. Please
help.

Hi Raggy :)

Here are a couple of other suggestions you can try:

Then a system restore to a date prior to when you installed the SP2 if
possible. If not, then try a repair of IE. Instructions for each are
below. You will likely have to contact the company who made your computer
if the program was preinstalled at the factory. If you don't have a CD from
the mfg., then you'll have to contact them to see if you can get one.

Hi Jan,

Was away from the page for some time; I had some problems with access as I
was also trying to repair & reinstall. I have since completed repair &
re-install of IE 6 as per relevant articles on support pages. I have not been
able to do sfc /scannow, as, the process doesn't recognize the CD inserted
when prompted-the OS basically is from my Work & the Systems chap has got the
CD. What do you suggest now? I noticed there is one'Registry Mecanic' or
something but which again costs. Do you suggest anything simpler, to rectify
defective files etc.?

Troubled, I remain.

Hi Jan &/or anyone else willing to help me.

Continuing from earlier posts above, now, after uninstalling/removing some
programs (Add/Remove) & some settings in SP2 Firewall/ Internet Properties,
IE now allows only some downloads. These could be either some specific files
from sites or file types but I have no technical knowledge about this. Can
someone provide an interpretation & guidance on what can make it possible for
all downloads to be allowed, with user discretion?

Hi,

I just wanted to add supplementary info. for my previous post: I tested from
download.com; I could get dialog box for two files: JAD6_BASIC.exe from
software-files.download.com & PB.exe, also from the same site whreas Spyware
Doctor 3.1 from dl3.pctools.com & Pal Talk 7.0 from ftp.download.com failed.
So...? What & where shall I look now?!

Are you getting any error messages? If so, please try to post the exact
wording. What exactly happens now when you try to download? I very well may
be that some setting or some other program on your machine is blocking the
downloads. Do you have Yahoo Companion? If so, uninstall it.

How about ZA Pro? It is know to cause some problems, so check the settings
to be sure is not blocking the downloads.

Zone Alarm Pro blocks all access to FTP sites by default. You have to
un-block FTP sites on a
site-by-site basis as follows:

In ZA, go to the Firewall | Zones page and click on the add button and
select host/site. Enter ftp.download.com in the name field, give it a
meaningful description,
press "Lookup". Make sure that "Trusted" is selected and press "OK" then
"Apply". You'll never have any problems with that site again (unless they
change their IP address). Do the same for any other FTP sites you want to
use.

The same procedure sould work for ZA Plus.

Same with your AV and firewall.

Take a look at the information here and see if it might help:

Hi Jan,

I "removed" Yahoo Customizations from Add/Remove, deleted Yahoo Companion
folder (checked-Yahoo Companion no longer starts);

I don't have ZA Pro.

I tried to download two files, again from download.com; 1. Webroot Spy
Sweeper 3.5 (Publisher-Webroot Software)-->A mini pop up window appears at
the top left corner of the screen, which can't be expanded..the task bar info
in that window reads "Unknown Zone". 2. Active Webcam 5.6-->error message,
after time "Internet Explorer cannot download AWC-PYS.exe from
ftp.download.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site.
The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again
later" !.

Then I added ftp.download.com to the list of trusted sites under
Security-Custom level, in Internet Properties. Tried downloading the same
files again--> An additional Security Alert dialog box appears with the
message: The current webpage is trying to open a site in your Trusted Sites
List. DO you want to allow this? Current site: dw.com.com; Trusted Site:
ftp.download.com; I clcked yes>> the inactive download frame with file
transfer icons appears but download does not progress. I suppose there must
be something with the Pop Up bloacker too; I have set it to 'turned off' in
Tools on IE tool bar & also checked Disable popoups in Security
Settings<<Custom Level<<Security-Internet << Internet Properties.

Another issue: Automatic Prompting foe file downloads in Custome Level under
Security for Internet in Internet Properties to remain Enabled?

So near, yet so far.. I have got all the help, Thanks Jan, lets just fix the

There are many things that can cause this problem, and finding the one key
to the solution seems to be a case by case ordeal, if it is not due to
hidden malware that SP2 outs when it is installed. As for the prompt, try
it checked or unchecked and see if it helps. Also, if you have any download
acceloraters or enhancers installed, unintsall them or disable them. Make
sure the firewall dispabled and the popup blocker. Also...go to
Tools>Internet Options>Security tab>for both Internet and Trusted Zones,
click the Defult level tab. Another thing to do, if you haven't tried it
already, uninstall the SP2 and see if that helps. If so, run a repair and
get the system back up to normal speed. Then try the SP2 install again.

Here is the best information I can find for this in regards to the
installation of SP2. Hopefully, there is a key in there I've overlooked
that will help.

It's also worth checking if you have a orphaned download handler entry in
the registry which is causing the behavior. Disable or uninstall any
download managers if you've installed any. To verify if there are any
remnant download hooks in the system, try the advice here:

The value of DWORD 1803 should be 0, which means the ability to download is
enabled. A value of 3 means the ability to download is disabled.

Obligatory warning: editing the registry can lead to serious problems with
your operating system, so back it up before making any changes and be
careful!

See my last reply to Raggy and see if anything there will help. Also, try
uninstalling the SP2 and do a repair of IE and see if that helps. Then read
the information regarding SP2 before installing again and what changes may
need to be made to your system.

You may also have a hijacker or other malware on your system. In addition
to updating and running your AV, download, install and run the programs
below in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled. Some forms of malware can
replicate itself repeatedly if not removed properly, so even if you have
already run some programs, run them again according to the innformation
below. Follow all instructions carefully:

First, Clear the TIF's and empty the recycle bin:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
(The TIF size should be set to 50-60 MB. Larger caches tend to be more prone
to trouble)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q816868

Not Prompted to Specify Download Folder for File
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=177976

also..

User setting:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\3]

AND:

System setting:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\3]

DWORD: 1803

The value of DWORD 1803 should be 0, which means the ability to download
is
enabled. A value of 3 means the ability to download is disabled.

Obligatory warning: editing the registry can lead to serious problems
with
your operating system, so back it up before making any changes and be
careful!

Hope this helps :)

"Jan Il" ?? ????:

Hi Raggy :)
Hi,

I just wanted to add supplementary info. for my previous post: I
tested
from
download.com; I could get dialog box for two files: JAD6_BASIC.exe
from
software-files.download.com & PB.exe, also from the same site whreas
Spyware
Doctor 3.1 from dl3.pctools.com & Pal Talk 7.0 from ftp.download.com
failed.
So...? What & where shall I look now?!

Are you getting any error messages? If so, please try to post the
exact
wording. What exactly happens now when you try to download? I very
well
may
be that some setting or some other program on your machine is blocking
the
downloads. Do you have Yahoo Companion? If so, uninstall it.

How about ZA Pro? It is know to cause some problems, so check the
settings
to be sure is not blocking the downloads.

Zone Alarm Pro blocks all access to FTP sites by default. You have to
un-block FTP sites on a
site-by-site basis as follows:

In ZA, go to the Firewall | Zones page and click on the add button and
select host/site. Enter ftp.download.com in the name field, give it a
meaningful description,
press "Lookup". Make sure that "Trusted" is selected and press "OK"
then
"Apply". You'll never have any problems with that site again (unless
they
change their IP address). Do the same for any other FTP sites you want
to
use.

The same procedure sould work for ZA Plus.

Same with your AV and firewall.

Take a look at the information here and see if it might help:

Raggy

:

Hi Jan &/or anyone else willing to help me.

Continuing from earlier posts above, now, after
uninstalling/removing
some
programs (Add/Remove) & some settings in SP2 Firewall/ Internet
Properties,
IE now allows only some downloads. These could be either some
specific
files
from sites or file types but I have no technical knowledge about
this.
Can
someone provide an interpretation & guidance on what can make it
possible
for
all downloads to be allowed, with user discretion?

:

Hi Raggy :)

Hi Jan,

Was away from the page for some time; I had some problems with
access
as I
was also trying to repair & reinstall. I have since completed
repair
&
re-install of IE 6 as per relevant articles on support pages. I
have
not
been
able to do sfc /scannow, as, the process doesn't recognize the
CD
inserted
when prompted-the OS basically is from my Work & the Systems
chap
has
got
the
CD. What do you suggest now? I noticed there is one'Registry
Mecanic'
or
something but which again costs. Do you suggest anything
simpler,
to
rectify
defective files etc.?

Troubled, I remain.

I'm afraid I may not be much help with this part of the issue,
other
than to
have you check the information below. Perhaps someone else has
knowledge of
a way to reinstall the program using the necessary files already
on
your
hard drive, or maybe something in the information here will give
you
some
instructions.

Hi Raggy :)

Here are a couple of other suggestions you can try:

Then a system restore to a date prior to when you installed
the
SP2 if
possible. If not, then try a repair of IE. Instructions
for
each
are
below. You will likely have to contact the company who made
your
computer
if the program was preinstalled at the factory. If you
don't
have
a CD
from
the mfg., then you'll have to contact them to see if you can
get
one.

Also.. make sure there is no scumware on your system. You
may
have

malware,
spyware or other warez on your system that can not be
detected
by
your

Hi,

Here I am with additional details:

I don't have McAfee or wahtever; I don't have Norton IE
Security
either.
I've since removed SP2 also & tried. The file I'm tryin is
a
.exe
file. I
can
download the same file using Firefox but not IE 6. I
further
realised
that
support from professionals is availbale only for products
purchased
separately from the Computer: In my case, it came with the
computer.
Please
help.

"Raggy" ?? ????:

Hi Jan Il !

Thanx for prompt response; appreciate it. I tried the
first
suggestion-didn't work; haven't restarted the computer.

The second suggestion: I think my system administrator
must
fix
the
problem;
I'm only inquisitive> so, I am not inclined to pay a
support
professional.

The third suggestion, and one link seems closest to my
problem:
"
File
appears to be downloading but is not". I'm about to try &
will
come
back
with
next post; right now, I am unable to open "Add/Remove
Programs"
to
remove
Sounds as suggested therein.

Thanks, & see you back soon.

I have been experiencing difficulties whenever I try
to
download
files
from
internet sites using IE 6.0. My OS Windows XP
Professional
&
Ihave
installed
SP2. The download does not start at all: after some
time, I
get
a
message
"Internet Explorer cannot download *.exe from *.com.
IE
was
unable to
open
this internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or
cannot be
found. Please try again later." What could be the
reason
for
this? I
will
provide additional details if required.
