Hi Raggy
Hi,
I just wanted to add supplementary info. for my previous post: I
tested
from
download.com; I could get dialog box for two files: JAD6_BASIC.exe
from
software-files.download.com & PB.exe, also from the same site whreas
Spyware
Doctor 3.1 from dl3.pctools.com & Pal Talk 7.0 from ftp.download.com
failed.
So...? What & where shall I look now?!
Are you getting any error messages? If so, please try to post the
exact
wording. What exactly happens now when you try to download? I very
well
may
be that some setting or some other program on your machine is blocking
the
downloads. Do you have Yahoo Companion? If so, uninstall it.
How about ZA Pro? It is know to cause some problems, so check the
settings
to be sure is not blocking the downloads.
Zone Alarm Pro blocks all access to FTP sites by default. You have to
un-block FTP sites on a
site-by-site basis as follows:
In ZA, go to the Firewall | Zones page and click on the add button and
select host/site. Enter ftp.download.com in the name field, give it a
meaningful description,
press "Lookup". Make sure that "Trusted" is selected and press "OK"
then
"Apply". You'll never have any problems with that site again (unless
they
change their IP address). Do the same for any other FTP sites you want
to
use.
The same procedure sould work for ZA Plus.
Same with your AV and firewall.
Take a look at the information here and see if it might help:

Hi Jan &/or anyone else willing to help me.
Continuing from earlier posts above, now, after
uninstalling/removing
some
programs (Add/Remove) & some settings in SP2 Firewall/ Internet
Properties,
IE now allows only some downloads. These could be either some
specific
files
from sites or file types but I have no technical knowledge about
this.
Can
someone provide an interpretation & guidance on what can make it
possible
for
all downloads to be allowed, with user discretion?

Hi Raggy
Hi Jan,
Was away from the page for some time; I had some problems with
access
as I
was also trying to repair & reinstall. I have since completed
repair
&
re-install of IE 6 as per relevant articles on support pages. I
have
not
been
able to do sfc /scannow, as, the process doesn't recognize the
CD
inserted
when prompted-the OS basically is from my Work & the Systems
chap
has
got
the
CD. What do you suggest now? I noticed there is one'Registry
Mecanic'
or
something but which again costs. Do you suggest anything
simpler,
to
rectify
defective files etc.?
Troubled, I remain.
I'm afraid I may not be much help with this part of the issue,
other
than to
have you check the information below. Perhaps someone else has
knowledge of
a way to reinstall the program using the necessary files already
on
your
hard drive, or maybe something in the information here will give
you
some
instructions.

Hi Raggy
Here are a couple of other suggestions you can try:
Then a system restore to a date prior to when you installed
the
SP2 if
possible. If not, then try a repair of IE. Instructions
for
each
are
below. You will likely have to contact the company who made
your
computer
if the program was preinstalled at the factory. If you
don't
have
a CD
from
the mfg., then you'll have to contact them to see if you can
get
one.

Hi,
Here I am with additional details:
I don't have McAfee or wahtever; I don't have Norton IE
Security
either.
I've since removed SP2 also & tried. The file I'm tryin is
a
.exe
file. I
can
download the same file using Firefox but not IE 6. I
further
realised
that
support from professionals is availbale only for products
purchased
separately from the Computer: In my case, it came with the
computer.
Please
help.

Hi Jan Il !
Thanx for prompt response; appreciate it. I tried the
first
suggestion-didn't work; haven't restarted the computer.
The second suggestion: I think my system administrator
must
fix
the
problem;
I'm only inquisitive> so, I am not inclined to pay a
support
professional.
The third suggestion, and one link seems closest to my
problem:
"
File
appears to be downloading but is not". I'm about to try &
will
come
back
with
next post; right now, I am unable to open "Add/Remove
Programs"
to
remove
Sounds as suggested therein.
Thanks, & see you back soon.

I have been experiencing difficulties whenever I try
to
download
files
from
internet sites using IE 6.0. My OS Windows XP

Ihave

get
a

"Internet Explorer cannot download *.exe from *.com.
IE

unable to

this internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or
cannot be
found. Please try again later." What could be the
reason
for
this? I
