Opening trial software files

I am unable to open the file 'office.exc' after downloading the free trial
version of the 'office standard edition 2003'.

I am prompted with the message that the file 'is not a valid Win32
application'

i think that you will
have better luck with
creating shortcuts and initiating
the *.exe files found
in the office folder, ppt.exe,
excel.exe, etc....

I have no office folders as you mentioned........this is my one and only
attempt to use any MSN office product..........thanks for your assistance tho

it may be a corrupted and requires a redownload.

firstly, if you spelled the file correctly, it should be
like office.exe and not office.exc.
but even so, office.exe is
not the right one to use and start.

the next thing that should have bee observed
is the compacted downloaded file would
have began to initiate a setup process that would
expanded, installed a bunch of files, created folders
and configure your windows to recognize your
new trial office programs. It would have started
automatically, but if it didn't then you would
have been required to click on something
like setup.exe or install.exe instead of
office.exe.

can you tell me if your windows is xp and
currently updated?

can you tell me what kind / how fast is
your internet connection?

have you used your computer for a long
time and know about disk space and maintenance?

i have a couple of helpful ideas but
need to know the couple of things above

First of all you accurately corrected my tag on the file.....it is office.exe
as you said.
I am running windows XP with service pack 2 and several updates
automatically installed on an HP Pavillion. My connection is thru DSL ( the
file took 2 hours to download). Nothing began on its own upon completion of
the download other than the install of the file in 'my documents'. There is
more than enough room on my computer as I still have 68% free space shown
when I defrag.
As I said before, upon trying to open the file I am prompted with a message
'office.exe is not a valid Win32 application'......don't know what that
means. No matter what option I use to run the file I am seeing the same
prompt.
Know that your help is really appreciated. The online course I taking to
learn 'Office FrontPage 2003' requires Office Word......hence the MSN
download I'm having trouble with.

ok...,
since you need this for school
the trial may not be worth the
tangent from your focus, especially
since the issue is with a trial.

Granted that there is an oddity about the error
you are getting but it could easily be attributed to
the file being corrupted during the download.

what i recommend at this time is
to download the free
"word viewer" from microsoft.com
There are other viewers offered as well.

No real need to download a big
software package that will expire anyways when
all you seem to need is a small program that
will help you read word files/documentation.

If you got a minute maybe you
can do one last little attempt
with that big file.

see if you can find
and execute the install or setup or
officesetup or officeinstall file
via safe mode.... (I really don't think
that it is office.exe )

I think your right........seems like a dead end at this point. Perhaps by
useing the PC's at the college I can come up with a solution. Problem is the
websites we're working on are all stored locally on this drive and accessing
them from the college could prove tricky......firewall should prevent that.
I will try to download the site(s) files to a floppy disc and bring them
with me. Keep an eye on this message board......I learning as I go!

Thanks again...

hmm....?
i'm a little confused now.
i thought you needed a viewer only.

but apparently you are needing to view
files on a college computer from your
home pc. thus this is why you want
to bring the files home on a floppy, right?

well, the first thing i would try is to maybe
send the files to yourself via email or access
them from your pc via links over the net.

the other thing is that you may be able
to access those files and directories via ftp from
you computer. your instructor would have
the address and passwords for this.

you should mention the above to your instructor
and see if these are options implemented and avail
to students.

the other thing is that there is an open source
freeware that is msoffice's competition. I didn't
want to suggest this to you beforehand because
it didn't seem to be the solution to the original
issue.

i could give you the link but i think your instructor
knows of this opensource program as well and you
may not actually require it. However, i beleive the
open source has a webpage editing module as well
as a document module.

why don't you mention the above suggestions with your
instructor to see which one would be best
for you.

It's better to get some advice specific to your
needs directly from the source.
you might agree that this would be better than trial and error.

floppies are the thing of the past but
there are some that still like riding around in
a model T....

:)

ps: i don't like to watch threads for more than 24hours but
you may have a solution for me...
