Opening Oulook 2003 Emails with Oulook 2002

David J.

I use Outlook 2002 (XP) but need to open some important emails exported as a
..pst file from Oulook 2003. They don't open. Is there a conversion or
something I must to to get compatibility? How do I do this?
Thank you

it was exported as unicode format pst which outlook 2002 can't open. It
would be best if you could have it exported in the outlook 97-2002 format,
otherwise you need a 3rd party tool- 'pst upgrade tool' in the tools list at
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ansi-to-unicode.asp can convert unicode to
ansi.

Thanks for the tip. I tried this but thepst upgrade tool says it needs
outlook 2003 to degrade it from unicode to ansi and I don't actually have
outlook 2003 (if I did I would be able to access the emails and wouldn't need
to convert). Is there another way without having outlook 2003 installed?
Thanks again.

No... but if you have outlook 2003 (or 2007) installed, you wouldn't need
the tool. You could download the trial of office 2007, but it will screw up
your current config. Have any friends handy with outlook 2007 or 2003
installed?

Diane,

I will ask around, but if I imported email files into their outlook, would
these not get mixed up with all theirs? I have rather large .pst files with
lots of messages, etc.

But that raises another question:

I wanted to install outlook (office) 2003 to solve this. I removed office
XP with Control Panel and ran a good disc to install office 2003. The
installation stopped several times when the wizard could not find certain
..cab files, but when I checked the disc the files were on the disc.... ? I
tried this several times with the same result.....

I have an older laptop Toshiba Portege 4010 933MHz, 750 MB RAM, 20 GB HD
capacity with 7.25 GB free, running XP Pro SP3, AVG and Malwarebytes...

Tips? Ideas? Solutions?
Thanks.

Of course. That's why you wouldn't use import, you'd use File>Open>Outlook
Data File. Then your stuff and their stuff would remain completely separate.

You might try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to completely remove
the prior Office.
