Opening folders with Windows Explorer

I have put some links of my most popular folders on the links toolbar of
Windows Explorer so that I can quickly look in these folders.

When I click on a link to a folder on this toolbar, instead of the contents
of the folder showing in the right-hand panel of Windows Explorer, a new
window appears which doesn't have the normal left-hand 'folders view'. The
only way to get my folder contents to appear in the same window is to
right-click my folder link and select 'explore'.

Is there a way to make left-clicking a folder link make it appear in the
right-hand side of widnows Explorer without opening a new window?

In Windows Explorer: Tools/Folder Options/General tab/ choose the 'Open each
folder in the same window'

The folder tree is NOT normal. It a compatability thing thrown in to keep ex-file manager users happy. Most operating systems won't have this "feature" because it's a poor idea.

Change your shortcuts to the non standard way
explorer /e,<path>

Note /e implies /n which is new window.

You can change Open to Explore as the default verb for all folders by setting the default value at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell to explore (from nothing).

If you use your computer as designed you won't have problems. I use it normally, you don't.

I have that option set, but it doesn't help. If I click on folders within the left or right-hand panels, there's no problem, but if I click on one of my links, a new window still appears.

I'm surprised at your ccomments about the folder tree being a poor idea. I and many other people think it's great, and that it's a poor idea to not have it enabled. But still, I guess we're all different.

Just to check that we're talking about the same thing, when you say "folder tree", I assume you mean that it's what I get in Windows Explorer when I choose View > Explorer > Folders.

Yes it's what I mean. And one day it will be gone from windows too. It gets more and more hidden with each release. Macs and BeOS don't have anything like it and MS saw the light with 95 and started hiding it. It's been around 5 years since I last used it.

Well, they may be hiding it, but for as long as it's still there somewhere
in Windows Explorer, I will be using it!

I tried your solution by using regedit, which worked, but had some unwanted
side-effects, so I think I carry on right-clicking and choosing Explore.
