Until recently I've been able to open attachments in Windows Mail, but
something has changed and now I have to download them first. Is this
something that's associated with IE 8, and if so, how can it be fixed? Thanks

Yes, it's associated with the install of IE8.
Many systems (not the majority) are affected. And so far there is no
fix - except uninstalling IE8.

The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other files types
opening fine with a workaround):
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered
value to %UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, when following your directions to
reduce the problem, I went to properties in Windows Mail, but could not
locate a "Start in" field. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Which Windows Mail shortcut did you right-click on?
Try the one under Start, All Programs.
Or if you have it in the Quick Launch bar, that should work too.

Hi Sue,
Open Windows mail, go to tools, options, click Options, go to security,
Remove the tick from the second square box. Click apply , ok, will be ok now

What are you talking about Geoff. This is a known issue with IE8 installed. Sue has
this issue associated with the install of IE8

The issue is with the installation of IE8, but I followed your instructions
and I can now open attachments, so all is well that ends well. Thanks for
your input!

I couldn't open .pps files or word doc files either after downloading IE8.
What I finally did was go to the tools menu in Windows Mail, then options,
and unclicked the square that says, "do not allow attachments to be saved or
opened that could potentially be a virus". I have had success opening all my
attachments since I made that change. I did NOT uninstall IE8.

Windows Mail won't let me open a .pps file without downloading it to
the desktop. Then pp viewer with open it. If I understood correctly
this is a IE 8 problem. If I was to uninstall 8 it would work from
windows mail again?

Yes, uninstalling IE8 will remove the problem.

Instead of uninstalling a workaround may be used which reduces the
problem to JPG and TXT files (all other files types opening fine with a
workaround):
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%. Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

Pls report back if the letter works for you.

Really interesting!
This does not work for me - at least not persistently. The problem comes
back pretty soon /in all if my 4 machines).

Did you try it with JPG and TXT attachments?

I had not been talking about Winmail.exe, nor of going to WinMail
folder.

I spoke if the *shortcut* (LNK) used fir launching WinMail from the
Start Menu.

Please try it again.

Sorry, No!
This will not help.
It may work for a couple of times but the problem will come back.

Yes! I also have it unchecked but still won't let me view .pps file
without downloading it to desktop or where ever. Must be IE 8 problem.

You are right. It is a problem caused by installing IE8.
Pls see my recent reply to you in this thread.

They open ok for me. JPG does...

"They"?
How about TXT attachments?

Try it numerous times. Do "normal work" (opening HTML mails, surfing in
the web) on between and then check things the next day.
I bet that the problem will come back.
In case the absence if the troubles would really be persistent, we wild
have to go deeper into the system's settings.

It will fix the problem but you will have several others, such as how
to import your WM contacts, accounts, and emails.
A much easier workaround is to revert back to IE7 for the time being.

I wonder if switching to Thunderbird will fix the problem?

As Thunderbird is a totally different beast it is not affected by the
IE8-WinMail bug.
But changing to Thunderbird will quite some side-effects like working
with the current mail-store
You might be better off by either returning to IE7 (by uninstalling IE8)
or live with the problem for JPG and TXT files (which can be saved and
opened then). All other file types will be handled fine if you apply my
workaround (see my initial reply to the OP).

You are soooo right! I'm back to the same problem. I guess the next thing is
to uninstall OE 8. What a pain! Thanks for your input.
