Can't open email attachments

D

Dragica

I have vista home premium and use Windows Mail. I have 3 users on my
computer. One of the users can't open email attachments, any type. He can
save attachments and open them from the folder, but can't just click and
open. I have the same problem as the administrator occasionally. When it
happens, I exit the email, re-open and it works fine. No error messages,
just nothing happens when I click on the attachment. I have Internet
Explorer 8, any chance that has something to do with it? I've downloaded
updates, checked settings, everything is in order as far as I can tell. In
security, attachements are allowed and it's set for Internet Zone.

Welcome to the Club!

There is a known bug appearing after the install of IE8.
So far there is no fix except uninstalling IE8.

Rainald
P.S. Do you really not receive any error messages?
How about the other user?

Your problem is typical of IE8 involvement.

Hi Rainald, thanks for responding! No error message, just nothing happens
when I click on the attachment. I will unistall IE8, hopefully that will fix
it. Why do you think I don't have the same problem with the other user, it's
the same computer, same settings?

Didn't you say that the other user can not open attachments either?

Apart from that:
It's not a good idea to run the computer logged in as an administrator.
Unless there are very special task ine should alway di wirk as a
standard user.

Uninstalling IE8 will not touch your data stored in the WinMail mail
stire.

Thanks. I uninstalled ie8 and ie7 is running fine now. I may try ie8 after
MS comes out with ie9 - hopefully they'll have ie8 debugged by then.

The problem is NOT due to having installed IE8, it's due to not installing
it in the proper environment.

[QED: Why don't all 3 users see this behavior all of the time?]

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.
=> US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020
=> Other locales: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=13043

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!!

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8.

=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your
third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide
install it.

Whilst what you say may be true, it does nothing to help the less
informed users when Microsoft try to "Foist" this product on users via
Windows Update, especially when the general impression is given that
auto updates should be left on to insure security. It's from Microsoft
so it must be good, lets just accept it.

I just acquired an Acer Netbook, nothing installed, when started it did
a fresh install of XP. After that I chose to try IE8 because it was
offered as a "Security" improvement. Ended up uninstalling it due to
problems and IE8, as far as I am concerned is now in the **** can for
the foreseeable future, I will use Firefox / Chrome / Safari or whatever
else.

I mean the general advice is do not connect to the net without a
firewall and AV in operation so how do these other browsers work around
that?

Not being argumentative here, but IE is supposed to be a browser foe
heaven's sake, why do they make it harder to install then the others
which just "Work"?
