When I open a program from windows explorer and select to open a file,
a box comes up with the folder/files shown. If I want the last file I
put in the folder, I have to click on the view menu, then select
details, then if the box is not open large enough to see the date
modified, I have to drag it larger and then double click on the date
modified or what ever way I chose to find the file. Is there a way to
make the "open box" into the way I want it and save the settings?

Unfortunately there isn't a way to save these changes to be the default.
Why not use the recent documents menu from Start?

See if this third-party add-on helps, John.
