Onboard LAN device not detected

Hi
This morning when i turned my pc on, there was a missing network connection.
it is an onboard lan device allowing my client pc to connect to host and then
internet.
ive tried the following to make window realise that there is a evice there:
1:repair all network connections, run network setup wizard
2:check cables and see back for LAN device activity (blinking lights etc).I
see activity suggesting that the lan device isworking.
3: search for the hardware using the hardware manager, and add hardware wizard
4:check for enable lan device in bios.
5: reinstalling LAN device driver.
6:system restore
7:trying another device to connect to from the LAN device that is not
detected ie router.
8:re installing windows and motherboard drivers.
9: thinking about purchasing pci lan device....

there must be some way i can get windows to remember that there is actually
a lan device and it is switched on and it is connected to another computer.

all of the trouble shooters do not solve problems where windows xp thinks
there is not hardware but there is.

If ive missed anything to try...please ell me im at a complete loss and
there is no support anywhere on the gigabyte mother boards site that
helps...thanks for reading. any advice would be a relief

thanks so much

Was it working before...Gigabyte uses intel components (usually),go to
intel.com
downloads, chipset, software, download the chip set installation utility, then in
downloads,networking,desktop adapters,locate youre hardware,download the
software...Also,if it keeps on failing,create a new user,open xp in new,see
if it
then works,if so the old account is corrupted, delete it...

thx for the prompt reply--

yes the device in question (realtek ethernet network adapter) has been
working for 4 years. this morning it dissappeared from the network
connections.

a new account has the same connections. what i should have is the realtek
lan device and the 1934 net adapter. these would normally be bridged and i
connect directly (not thru hub) to the internet host.

what i have since this morning is only the 1934 net adapter. windows thinks
that i can connect to the net thru this if i run the network setup wizard.
it is impossible. my pc cannot even create an ip address for itself, it has
no network hardware according to windows, other than the 1934.

i found some updates for my motherboard and installed them but nothing has
changed. updates included via chipset, and bios.

by this point im thinking that somehow, the realtek ethernet adapter has
severed its communication somewhere on the motherboard. it still has power
running to it, and the host computer still recognises it when connected. but
somewhere the info is lost and windows cannot see that there is a device.

i will buy a pci ethernet card to try and find out if its the device or if
it is windows, thx for your help.
