Onboard audio - nothing but crackling and popping

Ok, so my sound seemed to be working fine last week, now all of a sudden it
isn't working again.

I have two identical machines here at work, both have had the same problem,
one I fixed by updating the drivers, but that didn't work on the other
computer. Now, the machine that was working is broken again.

The Problem:
For the most part I can't hear any sound with any programs/applications
including system sounds. The sound is turned on, and when I turn the volume
up louder all I get are crackling noises when there should be sound.

I have tried:
updating the Realtek AC97 audio drivers
updating the mobo (Supermicro X5DAE) chipset
system restore to the last time it was working (last week)

So far nothing is worked... any suggestions?
 
Hi Sdel,

The onboard Audio Chip could be going bad. It could be a Hardware
problem, not a Software problem.
