Did you read them on the website or in Outlook Express. You can turn
the notification off in your Start Menu properties. You can also set
the time that a message needs to be displayed in Outlook Express to be
considered read. I set mine at zero.

Hi Rik,

To get rid of the messages about unread emails in the welcome screen
go to Start > Run > regedit , look for the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

You'll see a key called "MessageCount" which has the value you see in
the welcome screen, change it to zero.

Alternatively, you can download tweakUI which is part of Windows XP
Power toys, with it you can turn off this feature:

Good luck
